DIY SEOS for HT upgrade - Page 5

Excellent work. Yes, that is 33uF. The comma is used for the decimal marker in Europe.

I don't know if Duratex will stick to the PVC. You should definitely sand the pvc first. It might require some plastic specfic primer like this http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=119.

Coctostan,
Thanks for the kind words, and the capacitor info! Definitely going to pick up a can of that plastic primer.

Another thought I had was to do a contrasting finish on the stands:
I would black duratex my layered base and the mounting plate up top.
However; for the tubes I might go with a contrasting color, a burgundy/cranberry color that happens to match my GOM and my drapes (previously found a rattle can of the perfect color when I was finishing my build (used it for connection / receptacle plates) ....

No problem.

When it comes to questions of colors and aesthetics I take a pass.

Yeah I hear you! For me it is truly hit/miss. This is when I typically swallow my pride and ask for input from Mrs Cuzed..
Side-note; Your Avatar is excellent !! smile.gif

When I made some PVC speaker stands, I used a Krylon Fusion rattle can. It's marketed to adhere to plastic well. I was impressed with it. It stuck very well, and it dries VERY quickly for follow-up coats.

Great progress on the build.

Pit viper - thanks!
I'm thinking that is indeed the same spray paint that I used previously - yes it was excellent

That center looks fantastic and I like how your stands are coming together. Very well done.

Thanks PG!
I was worried how the stands with the pair of tube legs would look - but I think it will turn out fine.
And a teaser; my son's high school applied science department has a 3D printer; I am begging my son to print me up a custom set of logos for the lower front corners of my speakers.
If this comes thru I will be sharing ...
3D printer. Wow, that would be slick. I've never even seen one of those. I thought about following your steps with the malcom, but I am curious about doing the same with the TD6M''s or just using my 12's.

The stands should come out nice. Are you going to use a flat black or truck liner for the legs?

PG,
For the legs I am thinking about spray painting the tubes a burgundy color to match my drapes and GOM wall coverings (the base itself would be duratex black).
If I don't care for the burgundy colored tubes; then the entire pedestal will likely become duratex black.
FWIW the duratex is really easy to work with, you can adjust the texture by using different rollers, anywhere from a truck bed texture to a fairly smooth almost matte finish.

Maybe make them out of metal instead and dip them in chrome. :P ha... that would draw way too much attention.

Maybe if I sell them someday - to attract buyers - hey look at those woofers, and all that chrome !!

LMFAO ... that would be different for sure. I built some PC speaker stands that keep my speakers at ear height. I used wooden stairway pols and painted them black. Simple, but it works. I may redo them in the future and stain them cherry to match my office wood colors.

When I posted that I was somehow I was thinking of a kid I see in traffic during my daily commute.
He has his subs playing so loud his license plates rattle at stoplights, but he has this great big chrome "coffee-can" muffler to harness the output of his 4 cylinder !!!

Those last two posts sum it up perfectly !! FWIW
My oldest son has a hobby car - A '90 Civic with an Acura motor transplant (and one of those fancy "can" mufflers)
My youngest son; he's the man; got himself an American Classic > a 2000 Camaro in mint condition, and 99% orignal! smile.gif

Great work Cuzed! I really like the stands, the tiered base is superb!! What were you planning for the 3D logos?

Thanks - appreciate the comments on the stands.
Later today; I will update you by email on the logo idea...

OK; I have had a few PM inquiries on my stands.
Specifically - how am I going to attach the top of the stands to the speaker?

In the photo below the speaker boxes are shown upside down. I will be using a mounting "plate" (made from left over BB from my BUC build). Hurricane nuts are secured thru the bottom of the interior of the box and are held captive with strips of plywood. These same strips of plywood will also serve as stand-offs to support the XO boards. On the far right you can see the edge of a mounted plate.

The flip side of the "plates" will have these 3" PVC drain "grills" screwed and glued to the plate.

And here's an upside-down, "one-legged" stand, with the base plate that eventually gets secured to the bottom of the speaker box

Ooops! I have no idea how that last photo got in there smile.gif

Cuzed.i am still not sure how you went about attaching these PVC pipes to the top and bottom plates. From what you said, are you using seperate end caps on the top and bottom that are screwed into the plates and then do you just slide the long portion of the PVC pipe over the caps? From the looks of it, it looks like you took two different end caps that are designed to fit over the ends of the PVC pipe really snug. Is this assumption correct?
Marty,
I think those drain caps fit inside the pipe and are glued in place with PVC adhesive.

Marty,
Drewmc is correct. The top connection is made with these PVC drain "fititngs", the narrower end of the fittings will be cemented into the inside ends of the PVC pipes. Those PVC drain fittings are cheap about $2 ea.
For the bottom ends - no connectors. Those floor "base platforms" have 3.5" holes routed thru the top layers (FYI > 3" PVC has an OD of 3.5"). My next photo should help bring it all together

OK Gang; I need your honest opinion - don't be bashful.
I think the appearance with these stands is unique enough that this will be either a "love it" or "hate it" situation. Feel free to let me know either way - I have a thick skin smile.gif
What do ya think
"Love-it" or Hate-it" ?

I have also decided that I will not even bother with drilling terminal lugs in to the back side. Instead: I will be going for the cleanest possible look >> will be running the speaker leads thru the base-plate, up thru the tube, and will drill/seal a small feed-thru hole thru the bottom of the box. And I have a question on height: The current length of the tubes puts the center of the waveguide at 36.5" high. This aligns with my ears when the HT chairs are semi-reclined. By comparison my Klipsch floor-standers are 39" high. Curious how high everyone else is going?
The stands look good! Some my say they make the speaker look like a two legged, one eyed robot with a big round mouth. Those are the same ones who think a B&W 800D looks like a giant d***.

Nice job.

You could always build something cosmetic around your load bearing PVC or you can wrap something around the white. Thats if it even matters.

I think they look great. Or they will once you get then painted anyway.

When I built my PVC speaker stands (single post style), I too decided to run the wires up the inside of the PVC. Are you filling yours with sand? I did, and I thought at some point you said you were too. How do you plan to seal the sand in at the wire hole? For mine I decided to run an additional piece of PVC up the center of the big pipe. I think I used 3/4". I counterbored holes on the inner faces of my top and bottom plates to capture the pipe, and I coated its ends in silicone before assembling. In the end I have a pipe with a nice straight shot all the way through the sand filled post.

However you decide to route the wires, be sure you put some thought into how you'll transition the wires between the pipe and running along the floor. Mine come straight out the bottom plate, and the plate is elevated off the floor by speaker spikes. If your plate is to be right on the floor, you may have to route in a channel for then to escape.
