Hi cuzed2, I couldn't stand it, I just ordered all the parts for Big Mal from PE. For the crossover did you use the "Daniel" XO with the mod described by bwaslo in the Daniel build thread (you provided link back on post 67)? If tweaking of the XO is necessary I'll just order the required parts for the mod.
Looks really good and thanks for blazing the trail for Big Mal. My setup is similar to yours, fixed screen that's 24" from the floor. I plan to stick Mal in a 24"H X 30" wide opening under the screen. I'll have to tweak the cabinet size back to 29ish wide.

** Also please consider increasing the height a bit. Mine was VERY tight at 13-3/8" high. If I were doing it over I would go 14" high, and if I was going to cover it with a grill perhaps as tall as 15"

thanks for the tips! I'll bump it to 14". I won't need a grill. the entire 24 x 30 opening is covered with a grill. I'll probably just paint it black or maybe try duratex. I found the duratex website and they sell in pretty large quanties. Is there a source that sells in smaller sizes or maybe the $19 trial size? Not sure how much you get for $19 might be better to go with the $52 size and have nearly a lifetime supply wink.gif
Just got the ship notification from PE. Parts should be here Tuesday/Wednesday.
I'll definitely share the journey but probably not as well as you have done.

I used the "lifetime supply"smile.gif can on a pair of seos-2512 build and still have 3/4 of the can left,I could easily do 2-3 more pairs with what is leftover.

For me that means only one thing.
I will probably "HAVE" to build another couple sets of speakers. Would hate to see the Duratex expire just sitting on the shelf smile.gif

The time and sawdust saved on the flat packs will be used to make some speaker stands.
I have an idea in mind that will utilize 3/4" MDF (or ply), my new router, and some 3" PVC....

I literally just boxed them up. That was about the longest wait for a flat pack so far. I mentioned in the other thread that the CNC company had a bearing go bad on their machine. And after they fixed that they realized there was also something else wrong. So normally you would expect about 1 week delay. But we're small potatoes to them, so they had to get other orders done before us. Then the CNC guy got the flu......then came the holidays where it seems everyone just shuts down for a week. These are the newer design though, so assembling them will be even easier than the previous ones.

I will be on a road trip until 1/18. However; looks like another project box will be waiting when I return smile.gif

Cool, I built some a few years ago , make sure ya fill that pvc with some sand or equivelent or you'll have a resonant frequency from the PVC or at least that was my experience.

Thanks - in the old days lead shot . However sand is probably my best route. Will be using 3" PVC. Will probably put 2 "legs" under each speaker?

I'd lean towards sand too. Make sure it's fully dried first though.

I suspect the poly-fill would also work for resonance elimination.
However; I want some "ballast" in the lower half so these babies are not too top-heavy smile.gif

Cool I dont blame ya at all on the flat packs. Let us know how your stands work out. I'm about to build new sturdier stands for my rear surrounds and was thinking of doing the MDF/PVC filled with sand approach instead of just a tall rectangle type style. I too want a more solid less top heavy design.

Update;

Yesterday I received my new USB UMIK-1 mic, and hope to soon run some REW graphs.

Then today the FedEx guy shows up with my Deltalight flat pack kits from Erich!!!

Heading out on a trip tomorrow, but all of the above awaits my return next weekend...

I have progress to report.
However my apologies to EYLERON; way too mush traffic thru our house this weekend to even attempt any REW / FR graphs - Sorry !

So I worked in the shop whenever I could.
First task was to practice with Duratex finishing. I put several coats of Duratex on my center channel stand. Here's BUC happily at home on the new stand. The stand was cut to aim BUC at the MLP, about a 14 degree upwards tilt.
Once my mains are finished; I will be "duratexing" all 3 speakers (for now BUC just has a temporary black latex roll-on paint job). The Duratex is a bit pricy, but well worth it, really a nice product to work with!


As you can see below I managed to get my boxes 80% assembles and glued-up for the deltalight mains.
If you look at the bottom rear, you can see where i filled and glued in a backing plate for the speaker terminal connection.
First; had to cut a very thin filler strip to fill-in the unused rabbit slot on the inside of the back panel, before putting in the backing plate (no big deal).
Also at the bottom you can see where I have cut some X/O boards. Not yet sure if I can crowd all the components on to one board, or I might split it up and use 2 XO boards per speaker (one for the woofer, and one for the WG)?


And speaking of crossover boards, a Question:
I am 90% certain that the Parts Express capacitor shown below is a 33uF. However; the marking on the cap is odd >> 33,00uF
Has anyone else noticed this anomaly in PE capacitor markings; the ,00 part ?


And finally I started working on some stands for my mains.
I still need to cut the top mounting plates to size, and then I will round most of the corners and edges, fill the PVC tubes with sand, and will Duratex the whole thing. I assume Duratex will adhere to PVC plastic?
