Spacing Behind Bass Traps on Flat Wall

So what is everyone,s take on spacing behind a wall mounted Bass Trap (such as a RealTraps Mondo Trap), when mounting it flat on a wall, or ceiling? What is 'too close', and what is 'too far', and why?
