This is for a friend she wants to spend about $500 on it she already has the 3d tv and the sound system. I'm thinking only 8g dd3 ram should be good and I'm not sure which motherboard or tower to use.

I'm wondering if that is strong enough to play 3D

Things that don't need to be included with the build is a remote keyboard or Windows. I'm looking for at least 2 docking stations in a tower that not sure if the compact HTPC Case is the way to go or A Mid size tower any help would be nice I have more parts that I've been looking at but I'm hoping for feed back and help before I set my own list in stone or post them up here.

I'm also wondering if I should use a dual harddrive method with one solid state with the Operating system, an a large slave or just one large harddrive.

Playing 3D is one of the easiest tasks for HTPC (with right hardware components, of course).

The integrated GPU in G620 does not support 3D (precisely speaking, supports MVC decode, but does not support Frame packing). You have to choose: Core i3 or higher, AMD Llano APU (any), AMD Trinity APU (A8 or higher), or add a discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6xxx or higher, NVIDIA [almost any]). If you happen to have an older HDMI 1.3 AVR, you have to pay a special attention to audio, that's another (a bit complex) subject.

2x2GB RAM is plenty enough for any video playback task, but you can go with 2x4GB (no big price difference).

I'm pretty sure the TV is going to be the 1.4 hdmi It's a VIZO M-Series 47". I just looked up the specs and it does have it, and I was leaning towards the Nevda Geforce 630 I believe but was curious do I need one or two for just Blu ray 3D movies. There is going to be NO GAMING on this pc and I've been researching for myself to build a gaming HTPC, so I'm not sure if the for 3d video if you need one or the dual graphics card. When reading up on other things I get the impression that Yes you do But i could be misunderstanding.

Also what case would you recomend the mid size towers or the HTPC compact looking cases?

Is that one more reliable the nvidia when i asked a couple of people in person they steered me away from that and towards amd by telling me nvidia gave them some problems every time they bought their cards. Not the company but the product to be more clear on why they said.

But im very new to 3d so my minds a huge sponge at the moment but im defently going to check that brand out to the more options i have the better.

IMO AMD Trinity A8/A10 is the best choice in the mid-range section, I don't see a good reason to add a discrete card to a cheap Intel CPU. GPU in A10 surpasses GT 430 / HD 6570 and is close to GT 440/630 / HD 6670. Well, some people talk about upgradability, but...

hello renethx .. have you done any experiments comparing the K with non-K editions?
Is there any value on buying A10-5700 over A10-5800K and A8-5500 over A8-5600K.
I suppose that AMD used the same APU with undervolting and underclocing for lowest TDP.
The same trick that intel did in intel i3-xxxT versions.
So, what's better? Buy a non-K version and overclock it or a K version and undervolting/clocking ?wink.gif

I have A4-5300, A8-5500, A10-5700 and A10-5800K at hand, but I haven't even opened the box of A10-5800K. So far the best result is obtained by underclocking A8-5500 / A10-5700 to ~2.6GHz without touching voltage. Actually APU @2.6GHz runs with significantly lower voltage thant APU @default clock, that reduces the power consumption greatly. I see ~70W of the total system power consumption at video playback with madVR (yes, Trinity A8/A10 can do Lanczos 4 + AR easily for every video format up to HD). The stock cooler is enough and it's very quiet. CPU is less important for video playback (and 2.6GHz is powerful enough even if you decode any video by CPU). Compare with this result, 110W is outrageous. smile.gif

Switching between 2.6GHz and default clock can be done quickly by keyboard shortcuts (create profiles starting from "Balanced" power plan within Vision Engine Control Center and assign a shortcut to each profile). You don't have to tweak BIOS at all (you can do so if you prefer, of course).

So, I don't see a reason to choose a K version for a video playback system. A K version is still good if you also do some CPU intensive tasks such as encoding. You will have to add a better cooler, of course.

I don't think she cares too much about upgradeablity as long as she can watch 3d bluray discs and files as well as go on facebook. I won't be able to find out til Friday as well as ill try to put another draft build and part list together by then and post it in this thread on Friday as well.

What do you think about small sshd idea for the operating system unnecessary or a definitely do. The slave drive is probably going to be 3tb harddrive.

OS in SSD and data on HDD is a good idea. For OS in HTPC, 60-64GB is enough, e.g., Intel 330, Crucial m4, Samsung 830.

IMO you're much better off using a separate BD player for disk playback. HTPC is much better for playing rips of your disks, TV and streaming content.

Well, playing back an optical disc in HTPC is as easy as (or as difficult as) ripped ISO / files, there is nothing special in playing back an optical disc.

Among the three, AMD GPU is perhaps the easiest to play back BR 3D with.

Sure you CAN play the disks on an HTPC, but:
- Playback software may not be usable with remote
- The software is expensive whereas ripping is free
- Adding rips to a media library gives you coverart, keeping track of watched/unwatched, grouping by genre etc
- I like to keep the HTPC look and feel completely non-PC like. i.e. it boots straight into WMC fullscreen and only needs a KB/mouse for maintenance which I do via remote desktop.

Not to state the obvious but if your just going to play 3D blu-rays, buy a stand alone player. HTPCs are for people that also want a no monthly fee DVR, a box for streaming, or to store a ton of movies on a drive. I basically consider the HTPC to be a cord cutting device.

Those are desired as well she just wants it to do all so there isn't a need for multiple machines as well as go online to regular websites on her 3d tv screen (which doesn't not need to be in 3d nor does she want that in 3d lol) but basicly one machine that does it all, 3d movies ripped in disc, and enough power for internet streaming wordprocessing space for storing music movies and documents. Just so you have idea of what I'm working with. She also said she can break the budget of 500 if she needs to but would rather not if she doesn't have to. Upgrading isn something she's also super conserned about.

2/3/4. Not sure what you are trying to say. If she wants to only play optical BR 3D, then HTPC is surely pointless, but that's not the case here.

Why not just get the 65W quad core trinity, it seems easier then messing around with undervolting. Although I did undervolt my llano with good results.

I was going to do the 8gb of ram I only switched it to the 4 just to cut down on a little on the price with something not supper important or hard to upgrade later. But if i go that way with the GPU and MB i'll def. put the 8 GB in without even thinking.

The wattage I cited is about A8-5500, quad-core 65W Trinity APU. confused.gifsmile.gif At playing back a 720p60 video in full HD under madVR (MN in chroma, Lanczos4+AR in luma),

- Default 3.2GHz: CPU voltage 1.360V, the system power consumption 100W
- Downclocked 2.6GHz: CPU voltage (will be automatically) 1.064V, the system power consumption 70W

As you (may not) know, madVR (well, almost all video playback jobs nowadays) uses GPU entirely, CPU is less important (2.6GHz is fast enough to decode all 2D/3D HD video coding formats, of course). Downclocking inside Windows is prettty easy by using AMD Vision Engine Control Center. Even I can save a profile for each max clock and use a kbd shortcut to switch between them.



"65W" is not so precise. If both Prime95 and FurMark run simultaneously, the total power consumption could reach 150W.

All it takes to reach 125W is to put an A10-5700 in the ASRock FM2A75M-ITX and go into the BIOS smile.gif. I found turning off Turbo and reducing the freq. as you say helped tremendously and not to blow a second 120W power supply smile.gif.

Question: since you say Trinity A8/A10 for 3D does that mean Trinity A4/A6 do not support 3D?
