Given the Choice Between an iScan Duo and a Faroudja DVP-1080...

...for the same price - which would you choose?

(Been out of the loop on video processors for a while)

I want upscaling to 1080p of 2 analog video sources (HLD-X9 laserdisc player and SVHS/DVHS deck), and possibly conversion of a 1080i satellite signal to 1080p.

The Faroudja was always tremendously lauded back in the day as the absolute best - but the DVDO iScan Duo is, presumably, newer technology (and the feature sheet seems to list a lot more capabilities e.g. mosquito noise reduction).

Which would you choose, if both are $800?

Is there something even better in this price range I should be looking at?

Between the two, get the Duo. If you're shopping 2nd hand, you can probably find a better price for the Duo here in the classifieds.

For your HLD-X9 get an external comb filter. I have the X9 and the Duo's comb filter doesn't cut it, neither does the X9's internal filter which heavily suffers from checkerboard artefacts.

If you can find one a Crystalio II would be nice. It has an excellent internal comb filter and excellent processing for LD.

The seller dropped the price on a brand new Faroudja DVP-1080 to $550 - so it's making it a tougher decision.

I doubt I'll find a Duo or Crystalio for anwhere near that price, and the Faroudja has an excellent comb filter from what I've heard.

What do you think?

I don't like the SD processing of the later Faroudjas (1010 and 1080) very much.

There's an Iscan Duo available here in the classifieds section for $600. I think that's a better choice, even if you'll eventually be looking for a comb filter.

The Faroudja will give better results with very poor material, while the Duo will be considerably better with good sources.
