I'm thinking about the VIZIO. The E601i-A3 VIZIO 60" LED 1080p 120Hz SMART HDTV at Costco $979 any helpful suggestions or comments

My Costco (Chino Hills, CA) had a few in yesterday. It was $1949 with $100 instant rebate.

Already own the E60 version of this, and have been lurking here for a couple of months reading everything on the 60", the 70", and a variety of other topics - what a great resource!

And then I got really lucky yesterday. Stopped by Costco for a regular shopping trip, and saw one of the E70's set up where they typically sell the display models and returns. It didn't have a sign on it or anything, but was hooked up and looked good (the Costco staff had previously let me play with the settings on their main E70 display, so I had tweaked/improved that picture quite a bit a few weeks ago).

I found a Costco employee and asked him about the E70 sitting with no sign. He said they had just hooked it up for display and sale, and it was a return of a Black Friday weekend purchase because the original buyer found that it was too big for their wall space. He said the original buyer stated they had never even hooked the set up, that it had only been out of the box long enough to determine they couldn't make it fit in their home.

The best part - the employee did some checking, and I did some negotiating, and I bought it for $1,380. That was the $1,480 price they were going to tag it with, plus they gave me the $100 instant rebate that is currently in effect for the full-price new sets.

Got it home last night, and first impressions are very favorable. Played with the settings a little, and I definitely think the picture quality is a bit better than the E60. Watched a few snippets of BR-HD, OTA-HD, and streaming content, and everything looked great. Very responsive Wi-Fi, and, maybe best of all, no visible clouding or unevenness on a black screen. HD football today is the next test, but I think I found a great deal on a keeper. And it is definitely a whole lot more screen than the 60!

Congrats. That's quite a score. And good to hear from an owner of both sizes.

Btw for giggles I set the motion smoothing setting (first one in the list) to the medium setting, and left the second one off. For some video based shows where they love to pan quickly (eg Love It Or List It and House Hunters on HGTV) I have to admit I like what this setting does. However, I have also noticed a few times where it introduces artifacts - namely some pixelization around the edge of objects - that don't appear otherwise. The artifact rarely appears but it's clear that this setting produces it on my set (I wonder if one of the other settings would get rid of it?!)

I've used my DVR to confirm this. Have to watch a blu ray to see whether it has the adverse impact on fil m based sources that I saw the first time I tried these various processing modes.

Got ours tonight at Sam's Club for around $1830. Walmart and Costco had none in stock but Sam's Club had 3 left. Have had only one issue with audio out of sync and that was with Xbox 360 COD and Skyrim, I changed the Xbox's audio settings to Dolby Digital and it fixed it. (i think it was set to 5.1)

Everything works and looks great (knock on wood). Streaming HD from Netflix/Amazon looks awesome coming from a 42" Sony Wega, felt like I was in a theater. TV looks ridiculous on the wall right now though because of the tiny target furniture but our new stuff is coming in soon.











First thing I did was turn off the "soap opera" motion smoother effect, I don't see why anyone would use that.

Shouldn't I be able to connect to my pc using the media app? I would like to stream movies from my pc, but nothing is showing in my media app. I'm connected wirelessly to my home network and have no problems streaming from netflix.

Any help is appreciated.

For those of you following prices at Sam's Club, I was there 2 days ago and they were $1,998. Today they were $1,878. Could be a local store manager thing but suspect it was more related to the ton of E601i's that recently stacked up in the center aisle. I believe they are marked $998 (or $978). Wow, $100 an inch difference.

Just bought the E70 at Sam's N Plano, TX store last night. $1878, and there were at least 20 boxes out. Cosco had none and was told they didn't expect to get anymore. Not had time to get it set up yet.

Update: 01/02/2013 - Got the new E70 mounted above the fireplace and am absolutely thrilled with this product! I could have spent another grand for Sharp's product and not been as happy as I am with our new Vizio. Movies are great, football is phenomenal!

That set looks great in that space. Good thing you went for the 70. Fills up the area perfectly.

Has anyone had any success in controlling this TV over IP?

To be clear, I'm not talking about apps available on the TV (i.e., smart TV features). I am asking about the protocol (if any) to control this tv over ethernet or wireless (IP). For example, the ability to send it a TCP packet with a command for "Off" or "Video 2" or "channel up", etc. This is a very useful feature for those of us looking to integrate the TV with other components, home automation, etc.

For example, Samsung has an app that you can use to control the TV and you can write your own app to send the same commands and control the TV. I'm trying to figure out if Vizio has something similar. A lot of people used to accomplish this with RS-232 (serial), when this was more common on TVs.

But I haven't seen anything from Vizio and this app is not in the app store. It looks to be running on port 51010.

I got this bad boy at Amazon on BF. I would like to know if anyone found a way to stream mkv & mp4 using DLNA (UpNP) on this TV? I was able to see mp4 from the usb flash drive but no luck steaming it. Vizio E Series E701i-A3 497k .jpg file

After a week my Vizio Screen started misbehaving color wise. I phoned Vizio and sent them several pics and they were going to send out a repair guy but after the higher ups looked at the photos they determined that I needed a new set. They felt that what ever was going on might also be doing damage to the actual display. Luckily, Costco at Roseville Ca had 19 sets. So I did an exchange. My new set had firmware ver 1.1.4 FYI. On the four occasions that I had to phone support, I was never on hold more that 3 min. There support was superb. The rep told me as far as firmware goes, they push it to you via internet when needed. New set is up and running and I love it! Oh, I also ask about PIP. He chuckled and admitted that yes it seems to have it, but it not advertised as such and not supported. I found a cheap ($15) vizio remote on the internet that has the necessary buttons (PIP, Swap, change ch etc). I plan on getting it and programming my universal remote with it.

Is optical audio currently the only way to get the audio from the apps to my receiver? I also currently have the DVR, Xbox, and PS3 all running to the TV with just 1 HDMI cable.

How about the extended warranty? Is it worth buying?

I just received mine from Amazon today and it had some marks on the screen, looked like glue so I sent it back since they didn't come off easy. They did say that they should be getting more in perhaps next week. Not sure if those are to fill existing orders or for new orders. Bummed I can't watch it tonight.

Yep, thats what I am using to watch my antenna TV and netflix.

I've had this set since Black Friday, and have really enjoyed it. The 70" screen is immersive, and beautiful to look at. I haven't done much with the apps, other than YouTube, Yahoo Weather, and Yahoo News. I really have not had any problems, other than my remote was faulty (wouldn't make battery contact). Vizio sent me a new one. So far I have had hours of enjoyment. You may not want to wait.

Is anyone with a 70" at a firmware higher than 1.1.3? Guys in the 60" thread seem to be at 1.1.4. That may be specific to the 60", and who knows what it addressed beyond 1.1.3...but figured I'd ask. My set is 1.1.3 and it gets turned on and off enough that I think it would've updated by now if the update were available.

I got the TV on the second zone HDMI on the AVR. The first zone is the basement and the second zone is the living-room. All the BR/PS3/CABLEBOX etc could be use on each TV via the HDMI.

The picture quality is not like a SONY/SAMSUNG but is great for the price. I will have the nicer TV in the basement and keep this one in the living room.

I can confirm if you setup the CEC settings properly (and your receiver supports it) the audio will pass back to the receiver over HDMI. No need for an optical cable.

After much tweaking i got the set to look how i wanted and have been enjoying it for the last 3 weeks. I do think i am going to have to exchange it though because of the really bad weird panel clouding. On an all black screen, shows up when watching movies and is distracting, there are lots of big blotches all over and in weird shapes. I have tried the rubbing trick but it didnt take them away. Seems to be a panel defect or something. I have seen others post pics of same thing here with the 70" and 60" version. Hopefully 2nd set wont have it.

Can you share your settings with us? I've been tweaking this TV since black Friday and still can't figure out how to have a reasonable brightness without losing black detail. Thanks!

I had to take my E701i-A3 back to Costco and get a new one (see post #254). The new one has 1.1.4 on it. Do I see any differences from the old set with 1.1.3? Too soon to tell.

Where do I make this CEC settings ? In the TV or in the receiver ? Are you saying that the HDMI cable will send only the audio channel to the receiver while my TV is still in the TV mode (watching OTA/netflix/etc?).
I have Pio Elite VSX-23TXH with latest firmware, but dont know if it supports what you are suggesting.

Did it look like those pics all the time or only on certain stuff? I think my set was doing the exact same thing last night while watching the blu ray of empire strikes back.

One morning I got up and that's the way it looked on everything (cable, blueray, antenna). I unhooked all inputs and it did it on the menus. Sometimes it would go back to normal.

Yes, I would like to know too. I have a Sony STR-DH520 and confirmed that it does support HDMI ARC.

You have to turn it on in both the receiver and tv settings.
