Vizio E701i-A3 Owners Thread - Page 20

Just perusing the different recommended settings mentioned in this thread. Has anybody compared them all and decided on which seems best ( to them of course)? I will be testing 4 different settings. 1. Derrick H which uses the Movie Mode. 2. Anthonymoody which uses the Standard Mode. 3. Richard Carver which uses the Vivid Mode, and 4. GeneT90 which uses the Custom Mode. I will install each mode and tweak to my taste then compare all 4. I'll also get my wife's opinion.

After spending two hours with the new Vizo and trying the various selection of recommended different settings I ended up with the Custom Mode and changed a few setting within. Keep in mind that I am very picky when it comes to PQ, maybe overly so. I used the movie Hunger Games to make all of my adjustments. This movie provides a wide variety of colors as well as bright outdoor scenes and darker indoor scenes as well as a lot of rapid movement. My overall impression of the TV is kind of up and down. The black levels are quite good. The black bars in the Hunger Games were black and blended in well with the TV's black frame. The colors are punchy and not over saturated. The picture is only fair in crispness and edge detail. This was enhanced by about 15% when I installed my Darbee Darblet. Motion blur is pretty bad. This was probably my biggest disappointment. Even with Motion Enhancement oh High it is still a weak point. I also notice a bit of lipsynch. I know this iissue has been discussed and I will revisit those posts to see if I can remedy it. My initial feeling leans slightly towards minor disappointment overall. I have not watched any blu-rays yet. So far bouncing between Hunger Games and the Phoenix Open. Here are the settings that please me the most.

Picture Mode
Custom
Backlight
75
Brightness
63
Contrast
67
Color
50
Tint
+1
Sharpness
+8
Color Temp
Custom
Red Gain

Green Gain
120
Blue Gain
115
All Offsets
128
Smooth Motion Effect--High
Real Cinema Mode---Precision
Noise Reduction
Low
Film Mode
Auto
Everything Else
OFF
Pretty much every setting listed below Color Temp---Custom, actually had little effect on the picture if you changed them by a few points. These settings were arrived at in a fairly dim room at 12 noon in the Arizona desert.

Try the following, Then tell me if the Darblet is worth it on this set.

backlight 58
brightness 45
contrast 75
color 46
tint 0
sharpness 0 - 2

red 104 to 106
green 107 to 111 my set seems to have a green bias
blue 117

offsets 128

Color is the hardest to recommend because I think this is where the sets differ the most. I've ordered the Disney WOW disc

I've been wondering if the Darblet would be worth it on this set since it is so picky about source quality.

I think this is what you're looking for: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19410_102-580728/vizio-e701i-a3-picture-calibration-settings/
But the settings aren't very good for my panel.
The white is way too creamy or tan.

I've been spending some time with the DVE HD Basics blu-ray and included color filters.

To my eye, when I try your settings I can see a big difference with the Darblet. If you know someone who has one perhaps you can borrow it. In all my years of setting up Tv's for people I always end up with the best picture using Custom Mode. This TV is no different in providing a picture that I like. Plenty bright, good color punch with blacks that look black and white that look white and most important of all, good shadow detail.. I might prefer a bit lower brightness in a dark room but for all day any day this is it for me. Unless my wife tells me I'm wrong then of course I'm wrong. Gotta love em.

I left the set on, and about 30 minutes later, the LED's ignited, and all looked normal!. Odd, yet unacceptable. Back to Costco this past Sunday, exchanged the set (02 serial number, SW 1.14)....small feathering in lower left, no clouding worth mentioning ( actually pretty smooth uniformity), and definitely no banding.
Home from work this evening, too lazy to break out the sensor, and fire up Cal Man......the following results are a "by eye" calibration (I calibrate ....a lot).....dim room/bright room comparison made.....various material ( Mike and Molly, Scary movie 3,Spiderman, Spartacus, Underworld Awakening...Comcast cable feed, Blu ray). The following are the results of my dial in...The photos don't do justice (no pausing, I just snapped away...the blue hue from the Underworld caps are from the scenes that were shot in the bluish muted palette), natural looking picture with a sense of depth...very happy......for now

I like these settings. I tweaked them slightly as its a tad dim. Watching fantastic mr fox now. Loving this tv

How is this set compared to the other set Im looking at ( P65ST50 ) in terms of PQ?
The ST/GT/VT 50 is rated as the best picture by virtually every single revue I've read. Home Theater Magazine, Sound and Vision Magazine, Home Theater Review, the latest Consumer Reports, CNET. They all have it ranked #1. The VT50 won the 2012 Shootout beating out the very expensive Elite by Sharp. The only reason I went with the 70" Vzio was size and price. 70" for $1599. My impression, off axis viewing is the worst I've ever seen. But straight on the picture is terrific and BIG. I came from a 60" and going up to 65 just wasn't enough of a jump.

I tried your settings this afternoon and they didn't look very good on my particular set. Just goes to show, they are all different. Have you tried mine?

Thanks man!, I saw a few reviews on the 50 series sets, but wasnt sure if the price was justified.. This Vizio looks like a great bang for the buck and seems to have really nice PQ as well.. I just picked up a Vizio E320-A0 ans used the Cnet Calibration ( just basic , but took like 2 minutes ) and I am very impressed, which is the whole reason Im looking at replacing my Samsung 52A750 ( which is still a great set, but a little to small now ) being about 12' away on the couch.. Im guessing the jump from 52 to 65 Is going to be alot more than I think it is, but thats usually a good thing smile.gif

I tried your settings and really like them.....
Thanks
Glad you like them. Tonight we'll throw in the New Ice Age blu-ray. Of course how bad can a animated blu-ray look. I do notice some large white blotches across the bottom of a dark screen. Not being familiar with LCD's I'm guessing this might be flash lighting? I hope some of you other folks give these settings a try. They should work with the 60" also.

Ever since I moved to 1.1.5, my TV has randomly shut off twice in last 3 days. It never happened in last 2 months (bought on black friday). But it has happened twice so far and this is while watching TV on coax once and second time on HDMI hooked to htpc while watching it. Its not that its going to 10min idle mode. May be I should turn that off and try.

Edit: its 46LFTR... serial number.

Ill post my setttings tomorrow too.

It's almost unfair to watch a blu-ray and consider the PQ of this TV. I watched a couple of episodes of "Wild Deep" and was ultra impressed with the PQ. Flat out stunning. I did back off the brightness a little watching in a completely dark room. The TV itself lights up the room almost enough to read in. So far I am very happy even though some shortcomings are evident. Off axis is disappointing and it takes a bit of tweaking to get a good balance between back light levels and brightness levels that allow for acceptable indoor and outdoor scenes. Custom Mode really does give you the most tweakability (a new word me thinks).

Thanks so much for this ... this is what I trying to find.

Would you be willing to share you r settings? I'm using Derrick H settings right now (the ones above showing pics of his settings) and I really like them ... i tweaked em a tad bit on brightness and backlight but I like everything else so far.

Would love to know where you have yours set at using this DVE HD Basic calibration disc.

Thanks so much and I hope to see your setting soon. smile.gif

"Wild Deep"? what is that.......
Yes this display really brightens up come night time...
and yes off axis is a bit disappointing but I'm coming from a 65" Panasonic plasma,
maybe all LED/LCDs are like that....

I have Directv and only have my HDTV channels activated, so far all of the DTV channels look great on Panny HDTV and Epson projector. For owners who have DTV and the 70 inch Vizio do the all of the HD channels look great and not grainy on this set. I calibrated a 65 inch Sammy and ALL of the hd Directv channels also looked spectacular. Just trying to make a decision between a Sammy and this Vizio when it comes to HDTV viewing. i know the BD viewing on this set is great but the HDTV viewing might be suspect?
I thought the "movie" and "custom" modes were only different in the presets. Is there something behind the scenes that make these modes different?
Hi all,

I have had my Vizio since the Black Friday sales and really love this TV. It has been a great addition to my home theater!

I was wondering if anyone with DirecTV has experienced ta similar picture issue that I have on a couple of channels, in particular Disney. For some shows that my daughter watches, we get this strange row of "data" at the very top of the TV screen. You can see this on the image I have attached. If I am watching a Blu-Ray, Steaming from Netflix or Amazon, or watching other HD channels on my DirecTV system, this strange picture behavior doesn't happen. If anyone else has seen this, is it something I should be concerned about? Is there any way to make this not happen for the channels / shows in question?

Thanks!
It's just the channel .... this strange 'data' happening at the top of the TV is not the TV.

I have seen this before myself on all my TV's .... really it's just how the show is broadcasted and it's not lined up properly or something.

When I have watched something like this and it's something say for an hour or more and I really want to watch it and this is bothering me I would change the vertical settings and extend / stretch the picture so this weird data look is now gone.

Not your TV though ... just the crappy station.

I have started experiencing this same thing. I will be watching Netflix and then everything locks up. I try to exit out of Netflix and it won't let me...it just gives me the black screen. I cannot access the the input or setting menus but oddly I can toggle the VIA button and the apps appear but then can't select anything. I then try to turn the TV off and it becomes unresponsive. Sometimes I have to physically unplug the TV to reset it because the power button doesn't work. Other times if I hold the power button down it will make a really loud and a disturbing POP! sound and the TV screen will power off but the white power light remains on for a little while. After a minute I can turn the TV back on with no problems. Every time I call Vizio they say its a problem with the app and not the TV so they can't do anything for me. Nice. My TV was also Purchased on Black Friday from Costco for $1489 serial number LFTRXNAN4600531. I've had quite a few problems with this set and was hoping the latest firmware would resolve them but it hasn't. I also have the feathering in the bottom of the screen which slighly annoys me. I'm not sure if I should exchange this at Costco with a different serial number series (not sure which) or just flat out return it altogether. A big hassle whatever I do. Any suggestions?
So , Im beginning to look more and more at this set everyday as Im still not sold on Plasmas due to still having issues with IR on the VT and GT that Cnet tested.. Im willing to lose a little on the PQ from those sets, but not much.. SO on a good calibrated setting Im hoping this Vizio can be close, although I dont expect a ton for a 70" set for $1600..

Also I see alot of guys talking about the Panel and serial number on this TV , Is there one specifically that your supposed to stay away from?? I recall having an issue like this when I bought my samsung LN52A750, stating that I needed ( or should get ) the SQ01 panel, as it was the better of the 2-3 that were out, But still didnt understand why? So is this the same with the Serial # and the panel??

This update has caused a lot of odd problems. A reset seems to resolve most of them. Just jot down your pic settings first, I lost a few.

You are CORRECT, Sir!

I'm sending it back on Monday, and the P65GT50 is in transit.

I think the 701 is a pretty good tv, and the one I got hasn't had any screen issues to note. But, I have wide viewing angles in my room and as much as I like this TV straight on, I can't handle it from an angle.

I've had Panasonic plasma's for the past 6 years and I should have just stuck with what I know, but the price on the Vizio was very tempting.
