Yeap, besides .asf, .wmv, .avi (Xvid & Divx), .mp4, .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .vob (DVD), and others that it can see from a USB device, you can change the file extension for .mkv and .flv to .mp4 and you will be able to see the file on the Vizio Media app, just click on it and it will load the correct codecs for the file and play it beautifully.
Note: .webm, and .rmvb won't play due to missing codecs (.RMVB will only show a black screnn with audio since it loads the .rm or .ra audio codecs).
My guess is that the processor they are using like the Armada on the Co-Star, can play many formats but due to licensing they do not enable all of them and only let you see some of them. Since the codecs are there, it by default loads the correct one to play the container even if it has another file extension just like VLC Player and others due.
Much better than a Roku (can only play .mp4 and some .mkv types) and no need to transcode or buy an Android box or WD live box

interesting. i'm not having the same luck when trying to use dlna. i've got mp4's, but when i try and play them it says: 'audio codec not support' and 'video codec not support'. [apparently this module was coded by a non-native english speaker] these mp4's codecs in particular are avc1 / mp4a. i've got some others xvid / a52 that play fine.

From what I can gather from the manual, the onboard media player is limited to thumb drive only and FAT32. Can anyone confirm that it will play content from an NTFS formatted, powered external hard drive? That would be something.
I'm considering getting one of these sets.

I'm not sure how much this helps but,
I have a dedicated PC that acts as a server....I have several drives inside the server.....I have several large capacity USB drives (different brands and form factors),conected to the server......I have various movie collections spread across the internal, and external drives..........I can get to ALL of them and view thier respective movie files on the E701 (once I set the path of course). And yes, the movies are various containers/formats (MKV,FLV,MP4...AVI,H.264, etc)

OOPs, forgot to mention, I am using a wired connection to the Vizio, and the server is on the same network.

I did. Not too bad. Seems a little dark, even in my low-light room. Likewise, I could not discriminate maybe two values above reference black using the AVS calibration disc.

i'm a little confused. you've got a server with usb drives, but how are you connecting that to your tv? dlna or hdmi? i've got a laptop that sits next to my vizio and that puts out a pretty good picture over hdmi. what i'm hoping is to get dlna working so i can get rid of that laptop.

How come anything over a 7 on the sharpness makes the screen flicker on most text on the screen.like the ESPN score scrolling across the bottom of the screen.
i love how my set looks on sharpness number 8 because 7 looks a little blurry.the set looks great to me on 8 but i hate the flicker.

Zeefreak,
I have a wired connection(cat6) going to the Vizio from my router.....the server is on the same network....this is how DLNA is supposed to work (with dedicated NAT drives)....mine are just usb drives connected to the PC
Clearer?

i have pretty much the same setup except mine is over the wireless. vizio -> wifi -> router -> dlna server. i'm able to get to the dlna server, but it won't play the formats i mentioned above [which are really the unofficial standard from what i've read] . the formats it does play it plays them like i'm watching netflix on dialup. the quality is god awful with giant square artifacts all over the place.
maybe my dlna server is junk. it's a freebie that came with a nas. maybe i should set one up on my laptop and see if the quality is any better.

Mmmmm,
The only thing that jumps out at me is perhaps my Server is doing the processing before the file reaches the Vizio (Shark 007 Codec pack is loaded on the PC)...
I would definitely try running some of those files directly from your laptop..

I set mine to 8 for testing and no flicker that I can see. I also run at 7 and am happy with the picture.

I think I paid $269 for it and from what I've seen as well as read in professional reviews the bigger the screen the more noticeable the results. Also the better the signal the better the results, for instance blu-ray or a really good HD TV signal. Basically they say you can't take crap and make it look good but you can take good and make it look really good. The Darblet is considered a "video Processor" so compared to other video processors it is quite inexpensive. I originally bought it for my Sony 60A3000 knowing I would be moving up to the Vizio. Both sets showed a very positive increase in overall PQ, not just sharpness. I also see that Darbee has come out with a second Darblet that is quite a bit more expensive than the original so I would stick with the original.

Hi!
Trying to get through all 32 pages of posts here ..... not sure I'll make it!
I just ordered this tv from Costco.com after many months of research and price hunting.
So, before this tv arrives (in 7 to 10 days, they say), what are the most important things I should know? I see people posting about "affected serial numbers". Is there a range of numbers I should be looking out for on the box when it is delivered?
Anything else I need to be looking out for? This is our first BIG tv. Feeling a bit nervous and intimidated.
Thank you!

I would not worry about serial numbers anymore. When you get your new TV and go through the owner set up stage the first thing to do is try a few of the preferred setting recommendations listed here (mostly in the first 20 or so posts). Find the one you like the best (probably in the Movie or Custom Mode). My first suggestion is go to First Take on ESPN (8am-10pm) to set your skin tones. They use a very good HD camera and show plenty of close ups (hit pause when you see a nice close up of either Skip or Steven A.). From pause start tweaking the settings till you get a face color that you think is how they would look in real life. Back light and brightness are two settings that you can experiment with forever so don't be surprised if you change your mind almost daily. One you get an indoor scene the way you like it then they'll switch to a bright outdoor scene and you'll change your mind. After awhile you'll come to a happy median. Also the YV's the picture quality will improve over the first couple of hundred hours. Keep in mind that CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, and pretty much all channels, don't shoot they're own shows. They use various studios and those studios are not all using the same quality cameras or lighting situations. Sometimes CBS looks fantastic (Blue Bloods) sometimes not so great. So take a few weeks to massage you settings and in the end you'll know what you like. I turn off all my lights at night so that can also make a difference. Have fun and if you're married make sure you involve your wife. Her appreciation will enhance your appreciation. Promise. Nothing is nicer to hear than your wife say, WOW, that's an awesome picture. Then you can think, yes dear, I am a genius.

Thank you, Andy! Actually, I am the wife. And I have to agree that the wife's opinion is very important! My husband needs to read this.

I got my wife more involved probably than she wanted to be but it's awesome when someone comes over and I get to hear her telling them about the TV. She's yacking on about black levels and shadow detail and getting the backlight levels just right. She even expounds on off axis viewing and makes them move off to the side so they can see what she's talking about. I'm so proud. Teach your husband on ly what you want him to know Stacey. You'll be proud too.

Probably more the room than the set, but who knows? At any rate, this was not a bad set of numbers to start with for me. Thanks.

Hello
I have received my wall mount from Monoprice
I find the lag bolts very long...
They are 3,5" long, and 1/4" diameter
Are they not too long? Did you use them, or bought different ones from HD or Lowe's?
What diameter should be the pilot hole? I found a source saying it should be 3/16", but read on some forums that it should be just a little smaller than the bolt, meaning bigger that 3/16" ?
What are you recommendations guys?
Thanks

Typically, the mount will be attached to wall studs, 3 1/2" thick, plus 1/2" of drywall. So no, they're not too long unless your situation is different. As to the undersized pilot hole, that is so the lag can get enough grip in the stud to stay secure. The recommendation is fine. The lags will require a little effort to run in, just use a closed-end wrench or socket.
