HTPC alternative

I have been having a problem with ripping my 2D and 3D blu ray movies to my htpc lately. My htpc freezes up or my blu ray drive fails. Really drives me crazy. So, I had an idea, I could just use my laptop and buy a external blu ray drive to rip my movies. The question I have is, do I need to buy a new laptop that's has a resolution that is 1920x1080 or does that not matter when I'm just ripping data?

Ripping means just copying data on an optical drive to HDD. Any decent PC with an internal/external BD drive can do that (with a proper ripping program, like AnyDVD HD).

One last question. Do the CPU determine how fast the ripping process takes or do the blu ray drive determines the speed of the process?

CPU is irrelevant. The read speed of the BD drive mainly determines the ripping speed.
