"Upgrade" to an Epson 3020 from an 8350 for 3D?

I was never into the 3D fad until this morning and I started looking at the much lower prices for 3D projectors from 2 years ago (I remember them being like $7-11k for an entry level). Now with the new Optoma HD33 and Epson 3020 out, it would only make my "average joe" home theater even more awesome with 3D capability. I like that the 3020 also has the ability to "fake" a 2D->3D upconversion, so it could add some additional effect. I don't watch my projector too much, mostly only for movies and some sports.

What do you guys think? Is it worth putting up my low-hours 8350 for a 3020? Definitely wouldn't be an even trade, I'd still be paying the quientessential "upgrade fee"...

Start taking a look at some of the reviews for 3D movies. Not big name reviews based on watching the movie in the theatre, but reviews by average Joe people who have viewed them at home, on a home 3D projector.

You will be able to find out how many 3D movies there are that you would like to view, and also how much joy other people get from watching 3D movies at home on their 3D equipment
I find a lot of people who have seen a 3D movie in a theatre and at home, seem to like it better viewed on their home equipment...Seems a large picture from a projector also wins out over 3d TV's, seems in the case of 3D, size does matter. DLP also wins on a almost ghost free 3D image but the new Epson 3020 has gotten good marks this year for it's 3D.

For whatever it's worth..I have the 3020. Got it about a month ago. Have watch many 3d movies and am very happy with it. From what I can tell...if you are not ping to watch 3d...then another non 3d projector choice would be wise...and cheaper.

But the 3d is fun...I love it. And if you wait for movies to be on sale...like right now at best buy many are 14.99...then not too expensive. It is completely different and way better than even the largest 3d tv ou may have watched at best buy...and I do find it better than even the theater 3d.

To do it right you also need a 3D Blu-ray player and an audio/video receiver that will pass through a 3D signal, all additional purchases if you don't already own these devices.

Yes, I did think about needing to upgrade my bluray player. I currently use a simple Samsung BD HTIB, so I'd just upgrade to the next one they have out now. This entire setup is in my living room (I don't have a man cave), so that's why I have an "average joe" setup. I guess I just need to figure out how much I could sell my 8350 and HTIB for, and figure out the upgrade costs from there.

One other thing is that I measured the distance today from the projector lens to the screen, and it's exactly 15'8". The 3020 at full zoom says it can make a 100" image (my screen) at 15'9". A little tight, but I guess it should work.

Now if only I could find it on a good sale....

Use the projector quote option over at Projector Central. I got a quote for $1699 for the e version.
