Internal Amp of Onkyo 818 or use Marantz MM9000 Amp

I just purchased an Onkyo 818 receiver and wanted to know if the internal amp is equal to my old Marantz MM9000. The Marantz is 150x5 and I have a 5.1 setup. I think the Onkyo is 135x7. Is it worth using my old amp with this instead of the internal? Thanks.

Hi, I'd like to give you a comprehensive reply, but in order to do so, I'd like to know what AVR you had before the Onkyo 818 (hooked up to the Marantz PA) and how familiar you are with Audyssey.

I don't have the Onkyo yet but I have a B&K Reference 50 S2 hooked up to the Marantz. I have used Audyssey XT before on two other receivers. This unit is going to drive two Klipsch RF 35's, two RS 7's. and one RC7.

I think your Klipsch speakers, while each are rated 8 Ohms at 98 dB sensitivity, will surely have no problem to be driven by the internal amps of the Onkyo 818 rated at 135 Watts. Anyhow, you are in a lucky situation, coz you can compare the Onkyo to the Marantz. Hook them up to each, run Audyssey on the Onkyo and check the speaker channel level trims for both cases. Should they all be between +/- 15 dB you are good to go. With the Marantz you may have a bit more headroom, but that will be really subtle. Take care not to adjust the input level knob on the back side of the Marantz after running Audyssey coz that will throw off DynamicEQ. BTW, among your speaker list you didn't mention a sub!

For the sub I have a SVS PB2-Plus. It has built in crossovers and phasing controls. What should I set that to when I run the Xt32 setup?

On amplifier ratings...

The Onkyo 818 is NOT a 135watt x 7 amp. It's a 135watt x 2 amp, into 6ohms, at .7% THD.

The Marantz is a 150watt x 5 amp, into 8ohms, at .05% THD.

Apples to apples, in a 8ohm load the numbers would look more like...

Onkyo 80wpc x 5 acd
Marantz 150wpc x 5 acd

There's no doubt the Martanz is a much more robust amp.

The questions truly are:

Will you miss the extra power?
What amp sound would you prefer?
If you didn't need the Marantz, what would you do with it?

Why wouldn't you run the amp you already have? Doubling of power is 3db so not huge difference. However the onkyo's can run hot so it will probably be easier on it to continue to use an external amp. I have the 818 on the way and have rf 35's and rc7 up front as well.cool.gif

The Marantz amp runs very cool. I plan on just leaving it hooked up. It's a great amp that's over 10 years old.
