looking for advise on a receiver

I love my onkyo receiver but its a lot out dated (maybe 12yr.) and no hdmi hookup . I'm shopping for a new receiver and was looking into the onkyo nr717 but after reading lots of reviews about how bad there hdmi not working properly and the customer service just being awful i'm starting to think to looking into other receivers but i really don't know which one is good. My speakers are the old top of the line towers from Cambridge Sound Works and there 12" powered sub woofer which sounds still sounds great, i'm not sure of the name or model numbers. The only receiver that i'm looking at this time is the sony str-dn1030 that cnet recommends and i'm trying to stay under $500. If anybody could point me in a good direction it would be great.

What devices will you be connecting? Are they all HDMI devices? If not what kind of video and audio outputs do they have?

I have been an Onkyo fan for about twenty years. The first Onkyo I bought nearly twenty years ago is still in use. My TX-SR805 is now four years old and in my opinion was the last of the good Onkyo's. Many of the Onkyo receivers made after the 805 where made cheaper. They got lighter in weight and didn't even come close to producing the advertised watts per channel. They're also riddled with HDMI failures and dropping channels. If something happened to my TX-SR805 tomorrow I would not replace it with another Onkyo. I have been a fan of Onkyo for a vey long time but I think I'm done with Onkyo. If I where in the market for a new receiver I would be looking at Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon, and Marantz. I would recommend staying away from Onkyo and Sony. Sony has not made any good AVR's in a while now. They're focus is on the PS3 and televisions. Which are good products.

I will be connecting to my samsung led 3d tv with hdmi hook ups, my kids ps3 with hdmi, and my sony blue ray 3d with hdmi.

Any recommendations you can make on the 4 receivers that would be under $500.

What four receivers? Unless I missed something you only mentioned are the Onkyo NR717 and Sony 1030.

I think he was talking about this statement made by Secret Squirl mentioning receiver brands... not models.
