I'll soon be placing my order for a few Dayton HO's whenever I get caught up with my bills. Hopefully this will happen before Xmas. Im planning on first going with 4 of the HO's, or maybe possibly the HF's if they are out and will suit me better. BUUT, thats awhile from now and the difference cant be that great.

So eventually this will be my build thread for my HT setup. I should probably first finish up my 4Pis (Upgraded of course) and after those 3 are done, then comes the .4 part. Maybe I'll eventually get 8, but 4 should be good for awhile. This is in my bedroom, no dedicated theater or anything like that. 10X10X25 ish. 3 4Pis, and 4 18 HOs shoud get the room going pretty good I imagine, hahah. Havn't decided on surrounds yet, but Im not too worried about those yet.

Anywho, I have a few questions about the Daytons.

First, unless I'm missing a big peice of information, these are a single 4 Ohm VC, right???

Second, Im going to go with a dual 2 front firing setup, it just looks way too narlly to do it any other way, haha. I was planning on doing something around the 8 cub mark, sealed of course. Any thoughts?

Third, Amp. this is way down the road yet, but I'd like something that uses Speakon connectors, I like the clean look. Im too scared to buy a clone, because if I blow an $800 amp, itll be months before I could replace it. Maybe Marathon 5050? Idk, those seem kinda old and outa date now. Opinions?

I know the last 2 questions are pretty dumb to ask, seeing as I have pretty much already made up my mind in those areas. This thread was mainly to ask about the voice coil situation.

Everything sounds good to go. Do it!

Marathon MA5050 is not suddenly "outa date now" because the clones are around. It's still a good choice. An alternate identical amp would be the Cerwin Vega CV5000 which is pretty much the same thing for the same price.

I think the Dayton is dual 8 Ohm VCs, ala 4 or 16 wiring options for a single.

Yes, single 4 ohm for each. 7-8 cubes for each dual box is perfect.

Amps - cv5000 is great for the money as are the clones if you're brave enough. A budget alternative would be the ep4000 that would still probably work well.

mastermaybe is running his dual Dual front firings off a Crown XLS 2500, which should fall in between the EP4k and CV5k in price

many options out there

You should check out the Stereo Integrity thread as Josh has posted up his new measurements on the SI 18, and it has much more excursion for lots less money than the Dayton.

Yep, and it's great (the XLS)...plenty of output for me without knowing a thing about the OP's room or goals of course...

The XLS is great for a number of reasons, IMO:

1. Solid output: 1200 watts a side and about 2,000 peak according to a Crown tech into 2 OHMs which of course mate up perfectly with a pair of Daytons run in parallel @ 4ohms apiece.

2. It is DEAD quiet. And I mean DEAD quiet.

3. It happily accepts RCA inputs if that's your gig.

4. Looks about as good as a "pro" amp can, IMO.

5. Reasonably priced at ~$500, new. Very reliable, with a 3 year no fault, transferable warranty. wink.gif

Yeah, I suppose I wish they had ONE more model that upped the power, but as I've said before, even if it pushed 2500 a side, we're talking about 3dbs on top of what is already colossal output, imo. I'm cool. cool.gifbiggrin.gif

no, it is thermally controlled

mine is almost always idle
and sometimes kicks in but it is very silent
XLS Drive core line is Class D, almost no heat at all

Good option James. If anyone is interested, one can pick up a new XLS2500 from Guitar center with the 15% off coupon for 467 shipped or picked up in store. In order for the coupon to work just do a chat with a representative. cool.gif It's nice to have a quiet option with RCA inputs too.

Honest to goodness gang, I'm sure they (the fans) gets cranking good at times, but it must be AWFULLY particular/controlled because I'd be lying if I said I've ever heard the thing.

Like nearly bending off the Daytons and going for Ultras, I almost said "f' it" and went with a clone or a QSC 3602, but in the end I simply could not justify the price, knowing I already had more output than I'd ever use 99.9% of the time.

Perhaps down the road I'll bump it up.

To the OP-"This is in my bedroom" I hope you have multiple circuits running to your room, else you will be tripping breakers like mad.

The XLS5000 is a great amp but is no longer part of their current line. You can still find stock on ebay and some e-tailers, but the prices generally hover around 800-900 now.

With a class D amp like the XLS2500, I don't think you will have many issues tripping breakers as long as you don't have too many other devices on the line.

I didn't realize the XLS 5000 was no longer being made. I got mine last year for just under $800. I first ordered that one from Unique that is still on line for $599. Ha, no such thing is available.

You're right, if the OP stays D, the breaker issue will be much less. Had I to do it over, I would be all class D.
