This is strange: It works in some forums and not in others.

I have a right column here: http://www.avsforum.com/f/44/movies-concerts-and-music-discussion

But not here: http://www.avsforum.com/f/43/forum-operations-center

Hi Guys...

I have reported this to the team. Today was a big update so it seems something may have changed that was not expected.

Have you tried out our mobile version yet? smile.gif Also, what version of Safari are you using on what model iPad? Just curious.

Hey Bill, thanks for reporting this. Could you let me know what browser/OS you were using when you saw this? Thanks!

Firefox 16.0.1 and 16.0.2 on open SuSE Linux. Still happening.

An update about this issue: when there is nothing tagged, nothing shows up in the forum side bar. In the case of the links provided, there isn't any content related in the forum operations center and because of that, there will not be a right-side bar present. This behavior is intentional.

Ok, thanks.

But the "hide right column" function as selected in the profile is broken now, right? And going to be fixed?

Hm, I just tried turning off the right-side column and it works for me:

Steph, turn it off here...

It's in the forum view, not the thread view. As here: http://www.avsforum.com/f/44/movies-concerts-and-music-discussion

Latest news is forcing a right column too:

http://www.avsforum.com/f/286/latest-news

In all fairness, the "Hide right column" preference is only supposed to do threads, but I can't remember if these were there a few days ago. confused.gif

No, I haven't seen a right column anywhere for ages. Until this incident.

Yes, that is correct. The "Hide right column" preference is only for forum threads:

Regardless, I'm checking with the team to see if that's intended or not.

Update: Just got word back from the team and yes, the hide right column is only for forum threads, not forum view.

Yes, that is correct. The "Hide right column" preference is only for forum threads:

What? It had worked for forum pages since the feature was introduced. This is a recent bug. Can we admit that?

I'm sorry, Bill. I actually went to the engineering and design team for this answer and showed them all the information presented in this thread as well as the thread and forum link views you sent. They specifically mentioned to me that this is the intended behavior. Any webpage with the /t/ in the URL will have the right-side bar hidden if you select this preference. Until this preference is completely broken, I must take the designers and engineers word that it does work the way it is intended.

Thanks so much for assisting me with this issue!

You've run rings around my logic.

For the record: the behavior was different until a few days ago. The old behavior was better (in my opinion) and more consistent (as I think anyone would agree).

My point was: without screenshots or proof of what was before, I can't point out differences with my engineers and show them what we're talking about. They specifically told me that it's only for threads, not forum view. David has kindly helped me with this issue and I am processing additional information he has provided me.

Anyway, I'm still investigating this matter. Please stay tuned!

@ccontenj - Ah, I believe that the right-side bar is not device/browser related but we'll see. Thanks for the info!

Could you guys do me a favor and try turning off your advertisements preference? It seems to hide the right-side column in the forum view for me...

Adverts on or off: I still get a right column.

I wish I had snapshots of the previous behavior, but who thinks to document that?

No worries, Bill. David already assisted me in getting snapshots of previous behavior. I just went back to the team to ask them and the issue is: the preference to hide the right-hand side column is purely for threads only. It does not apply to the rest of the site. Now, if you turn off advertisement preferences, it will hide the right side column if there are no relevant tagsIf there is tagged articles/reviews, then a right-hand column will appear. Otherwise, that setting to turn off the right-hand side column only applies in thread view.

Ok, so it was "wrong" and now it's "right".

What if wrong is preferable to right?

Die, right-hand columns, die.

(Aside: I did not like some of the changes in AVSForum but I have not been a complainer. These are small things and life goes on. But when a better feature is replaced by a worse, it is frustrating to be told "that's the way it is supposed to be" without any other justification. We know it could be otherwise because it was just a few days ago).

Thank you for your efforts, Stephanie.

Haha @ your comment "Die, right-hand columns, die"!

I certainly appreciate and welcome your feedback. I definitely see your point. I've made a note on this report with your comments so that we can reference it for the future. There's always room for improvement, right? smile.gif

If you look closely, it's tagged articles and reviews showing. If the forum view has relevant tags, it will show up on the right-hand side as articles and reviews. Ads should not be showing (if you have this turned off) and when you click on the thread, you should not see a right-hand column (if this preference is turned on to hide it.)

This is a amusing thread. One of the main things that I bothered complaining about when you almost ruin this forum was the mess on the right hand side, verses the old forum. Now I see its back when reading the actual topics, like the projector forums. But its suppose to be there yet it was gone ever since it was fixed before.

Amazing and I had wondered why I rarely come to AVS anymore. Keep up the good work.

Is there a reason that I don't even see either of those options in my profile?
