Newbie advice...rainbow on my new projector is BAD

Hello everybody
I've been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post. I want to thank you all to take the time to read my post.
I just bought a new acer hd5360 on blackfriday to replace my old sharp xv-z200e. The projector is really nice and I'm pretty happy about it regarding price (I got for 380$) and color, contrast. what is really bothering me is the rainbow effect, it's a real deal breaker for me...now I know there is not much to do about that except calibrating and reduce the brightness. I've already done both. Now I'm think about a new projector and to return this one. I can go up to with the price but less than 800$. I would like to stay on DLP and at lest 720p resolution. I don't care at all about 3D. As long as I have 1 hdmi I'm good. I only watch blu ray on it. Since the rainbow effect as far as I understand is due to color wheel speed and I wasn't noticing it on my old DLP (i believe it was a 4x speed but I'm not sure), what options do you suggest? Thank you very much

Hi,
I have the 5360bd, i forget which way round it is.
If i'm using pc and drag awindow to the right there is purple raindow around the edges of window, if i drag it left it's green, do you see this?
Benq w710st i have here allso does'nt show the same effect, possibly due to it's 6x wheel?

So yes the acer does have more rainbows that i see in gaming/films, luckily for me it does'nt bother me and as i use the pj 99% for 3d then i do'nt see the issue due to the glasses blocking it out 99%

That is really too bad the rainbow effect bothers you on the acer hd5360, 380 dollars for a 720p 3D, seemed like a very good price. Maybe go into the acer hd5360 forum room and ask others how to limit the effect. I don't know, maybe after 200 hours on bulb, it would get better.

Now, since you mentioned about replacing it with a less than 800 dollar PJ in at least 720p resolution. You could get the pro8200 in 1080p, and you should not have problem with rainbow effect at all. It was going on newegg about the same time as the acer went on sale for 650 dollars (700 dollar and 50 dollar gift card). Maybe call newegg and tell them about the rainbow effect problem, and find out if they can exchange it for the pro8200, and tell them if you could get the price of 650. Not sure if they will do it, you did buy it when the pro8200 was on sale. It's a shot.

Others can give you other models that might work for you too, in 720p 3d. But, since you are bothered with rainbow effect, the pro8200 is a problem free PJ for people that suffer from that problem, like you do. Others are not bothered by it, but if you are gonna return the acer because of that problem, pro8200 is in your price range and is 3 year warranty. On this site, it's listed as best PJ under 1,000 dollars.

thank you for you advice guys, I'll try the newegg way.maybe they will give me the discount. Does anybody know if the rainbow effect on a optoma hd66 is as bad as on the acer ? thank you. I really like the viewsonic option and I know that it's 1080p vs the optoma 720p but if the optoma doesn't suffer as much from that I'll go the cheaper way. thanks again

My advice is read all the user reviews on newegg and amazon and look to see if any reported Rainbow effect. Since you know you are sensitive to it. If you didn't do that on other model, at least do it on the optoma hd66! smile.gif I just read the first 5 reviews on the optoma hd66 on newegg and it scared the be-jesus out of me.

On Amazon user reviews, go from NEWEST posts (newest first... and going backward in time) , this way you see current state of affairs and not from 2 years ago. This way you can read posts from some people that have owned it for 1 or 2 years. http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD66-2500ANSI-Lumens-4000/product-reviews/B002ZWU33U/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending#R3F8GO8KVUKGCG

Also compare the specs on any model you are interested in. Look at warranty, internal speakers, and other features. Also go to forum rooms in here of the models you are interested in , for example, go to optoma hd66 forum room and read last 3 or 4 months posts. Any reported problems with white specks, or PJ breaking down after 1 year, are a number of people reporting the same problem and warning others. This time research it, also go into the acer forum room and see if you can spot posts the last 4 months of people reporting rainbow effect problem, see if in hindsight user reviews or forum room could help in getting the right model for you. You didn't know before you have worry about rainbow effect, now you know to buy one with no or few reports of rainbow effect.

p.s. maybe keep what you have, it was 380 dollars for 720p 3d PJ. See what others are doing to control the rainbow effect. If it was 700 dollars in 720p 3d, then I would exchange for pro8200, but big difference in price between 380 and 700.
