My Costco in MN had these on sale for $1049!! It was an instant 200 off rebate. I still need to get a blu ray player. Can anyone confirm the settings on the prior page? Does the Disney calibration cd really make a difference or will my money be well spent?

My HT setup arrives later this week so I haven't had a chance to set it up. Any initial reviews on this TV? I tried a couple blu rays and initial verdict is the picture quality is great

I went to Costco to buy the Panasonic 55UT50, but ended up walking out with the Samsung. Seemed like a solid TV for $1049 dollars (plus the $100 Squaretrade warranty, can't beat five years of coverage). This thing dwarfed my LG 55LH40 that I am replacing.

I do wish it had the 96Hz mode of the more expensive Samsung's, but I'll do without for now.

Here's a link to Samsung's product info: http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/PN64E533D2FXZA

I ended up with the Panny 55UT50.
The TV is going in our living room and I was out voted 1+ to 1.
She who must be obeyed thought it was waaay to big and saving $300.00 was also a deal breaker.
Set up the Panny last night and we're very happy rolleyes.gif with our purchase.mad.gif

On the upside, the Panasonic does have better picture quality and 3D!

Of course, there is always 90 days to change your mind. wink.gif

I work with TVs for a living and I think this is a great deal. I would recommend the 5 yr extended warranty for $100. I bought one for my house. In the stores they keep it set on standard so the picture looks real dark but my preference is to turn it on dynamic and then set the cell light to 15 sharpness to 53 and color to 53. You have to do these settings for each source. The picture looks great. Not as good as the 7000 or 8000 series but its less than half the price and still looks great.

Awesome, I am happy to hear that this was a good buy. I didnt purchase the 5yr plan. Costco already gave a 2nd year included in the purchase so i figured 2yrs was enough.

Friend is looking for a new TV and we saw this one at our local Costco today @ $1049, It looks nice the only downsides I noticed is it puts out an impressive amount of heat, we could feel the screen warmth standing nearly 2 ft away, also the screen didn't seem to handle the stores bright lights as well as the other TV's around it (looked a little washed out) But his living room lighting isn't an issue, it seems like a hard deal to pass up if you're on a $1200 budget?

I originally recommend Panasonic plasma's to him but now I'm not sure. Are Samsung Plasma's reliable?

I've currently got a 52" Samsung LCD, operating flawlessly for over 4 years, which is going to my bedroom after I purchase the PN64E533. If you check the rating in CNET as well as reviews in Amazon Samsungs are rated higher than all models with the exception of Panasonic. By the way the Costco rebate on the PN64E533 ends February 16th;)

THANKS for posting about the $200 rebate. I went back with my receipt and got $200 back.

Pulled the trigger on this set from Costco.. $12xx out the door with tax and the 5 yr warranty upgrade.. Took the 60" LG plasma i also bought from Costco 4 months ago.. Costco is great.. extended there 90 return policy for me.. So far so good.. just looking for some calibration pointers..

I helped a friend setup one of these tonight and I'm extremely impressed with the picture quality, It looks great on the factory Standard AV mode, the only settings Ive changed (so far) is the Cell light to 10 (default 9), Gamma +1 (default 0) and turned the Sharpness down to 20 (It was way over-sharp at the default 50 setting)

There are a ton of picture settings you can tweak and it saves separate settings per input, I have a 5080HD Kuro at home and this Samsung still came off as having a fantastic picture.

The PN64E533 puts out less heat than my 50" Kuro and I was surprised at how thin the Samsung is.

The only cons I noticed was the less than stellar sound quality from built in speakers (lacks any bass reinforcement) and the screen doesn't handle room lighting very well, it tends to get a little washed out if any nearby light hits the screen.

Overall a great deal at the current Costco price (Expires on the 16th i think?)

Not the best quality I took these pics with my cellphone (click for larger versions):

Yeah no problems, I borrowed my neighbors Honda Odyssey and I was able to drag/slide it up the stairs into the house.
Hate to say it, but "She Who Must Be Obeyed" was right about the size.

Where you able to put it verticaly in your Odyssey?
I bought last week a 70" vizio for $1,550 but my 1st impressions are not that great
I am thinking to try the Samsung....It is 6" less for sure, but $500 less as well.....The difference will pay a new PS3 and more !!!

I didn't buy the Samsung, I bought the Panasonic 55" and it fit just fine.
If you buy the Samsung measure the height of the box and see if it will fit.
I have owned a few Odysseys and the older models have a larger rear opening.

Does anyone have any wall mounting experience with this one? Due to my room setup I have to have this corner mounted. Not the best, i know. I ordered a articulating wall mount off of monoprice based on their suggestions and will be attempting to put this up on Friday. I am hoping it goes well. My concern is it is such a large TV and a corner mount will be interesting. I wish I had another solution. I have tried this out with a couple of blu rays (Avatar looks amazing!). I would appreciate any settings people have used. I tweaked mine based on the settings from post #12 in this forum.

Would anyone recommend the Disney WOW disk and will it make my picture significantly better?

I am excited for this TV and price! I agree sound isnt stellar but I am setting it up using my HT so I dont really care.

Spoke with a Costco sales associate a couple days ago who advised me that you no longer have to worry about laying the Plasma box down in the bed of your truck as some have warned. In addition to helping place the box in your vehicle they wrap it in a protective bubble wrap. In Any event Costco has such a good return policy any issues that in the event of damage during driving home you can always return within the 90 day time frame for a full refund or exchange.biggrin.gif

I know i was contemplating the same thing. I ultimately went with the Samsung, even though my room could handle the 70' Vizio. I did it for a couple reasons. 1) i had been reading about a bunch of voice sync issues on the vizio and imaging problems where you have to wipe a cloth on it, etc. 2) my room is large and has a lot of off viewing where people will not be centerd with the TV and I didnt want to have it get washed out with a LCD and went with the plasma.

yes so far. I will caveat it with I have not used it extensively yet. I am having someone come over Friday to help me mount it and run some wiring. So i wont truly be able to appreciate it until this weekend. However, the few videos I have run through it look awesome. I have not tried cable on it yet either.

Just curious where this information comes from? Sounds like an old wives tale to me. I had my Samsung plasma delivered by Best Buy so I have no idea if they had it upright in the truck but I laid it down flat when I installed my wall mounting brackets on the back of it. I haven't had any problems but this is my first plasma.

I went to Costco to take a look at the unit. I also look at the connectors, and they are all going perpendicular to to the back of the tV. It will be harder to wall mount it with an extra low profile mount
And I already ordered such wall mount (#5918) at Monoprice thinking I will keep the Vizio

Any way, I will probably pick-up 1 Samsung Friday night to see how it compares with the Vizio

By the way, do you know what is the vesa patern ? Is it a 600mm x 400mm?

Yes, it was something like that, I believe it was 600x400, i can double check when i get home for sure. I ordered wall mount #6517 from monoprice based on their input and my specific room needs. Good call on the low profile stuff, i hope I am okay

OK, so I went yesterday and grabbed 1 set
It took me a couple of hours to try to adjust the Vizio and somehow still not 100% happy with the PQ
After only 15 minutes with the Samsung, I was much more happy, my wife and daughter too
I found the image crisper, blacks are blacks (normal, it's a plasma), sound is great and I don't have the same problem than on the Vizio (sound going up and down)

I will be very honest: at the same price, I would probably keep the Vizio since it's bigger, with more inputs and they are located better
But right now, it is ~$550 difference, so I will certainly keep the Samsung

I will try over the week-end to do a side by side comparison, using my hdmi switch to go back and forth between the 2 sets....

OK, so I feel the Samsung has a great PQ, with nice blacks. In comparison, the Vizio has grainy blacks in dark scenes. Otherwise, both look nice with Bluray....except with blacks !!!
The only problems is that the screen of the Samsung is VERY reflective. I could see the windows (behind me) in the screen
So I inverted the layout, and now the TV is on the same wall, in between the 2 windows....Much better
So again, a little bit smaller (but side by side, the difference is not huge), great PQ with nice blacks, and more important......$550 cheaper !!!
i thin will probably return the Vizio...I will take a couple of days more to make sure though
I would like to find the Disney calibration disc to make sure both sets are properly calibrated
