My brother needs (according to me) a 5.1 speaker setup for his media room. I am giving him my Denon 1709, so he is set with that. I know this sounds like a stretch, but I thought if anyone could find something in that price range you guys/gals could.

I was thinking this:
http://www.amazon.com/Energy-Classic-Theater-System-Black/dp/B001202C44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354214917&sr=8-1&keywords=energy+speakers

I love my energy speakers, mine are a couple notches up from these, but figured they might do the trick. I have no idea about the sub though.

Thoughts greatly appreciated.

The energy take classic is definately a small room set up only! I might consider that for a 12x15 bedroom...

However, for a larger room, you want speakers with larger than 3 inch drivers...atleast in the front stage.

However, there are a very limited number of options that will get you decent sized speakers in a 5.1 for 500 dollars. Maybe the energy takes are step 1, then later add a couple full range fronts with center...

Both systems are good from what people say (I have not heard either!).

The mirage 5.1 has small drivers just like the Energy take classic series...

I thought with the design of the mirage if you wanted smaller speakers in small to medium size room it was supposed to fill a little better. Ive not heard them just what ive read here and there? I too have been looking at the mirage and energy 5.1 and JBL 300. Still undecided myself...

I would take a good look at this Acoustic Energy set from AC4L, bigger drivers

and what looks to be a seriously built and heavy for the size subwoofer. >>>

Use to list for around $2000 > and is on close-out pricing >> Plus the 30% off

Holiday price, puts it under $500 - the price will reflect in the cart.

They make good quality built speakers.

If Mirage makes that claim, I would like to see some physics/measurement to back it. Small driver are only capable of moving so much air and the mirage driver is even smaller than the ones in the Energy Takes- obviously, cabinet design can make SOME difference.

You can wait for the Energy CB-5s to go on sale for $99/pair and get 6 of them. BB just had them on sale. Vanns will at some point as they always seem to.

You think this would sound better than one of the pre setup systems? Can I get a sub for

treepop -- where do you live? If you are in the vicinity of a Fry's they have awesome deals right now on Infinity Primus speakers.

the CB-5's (and the Infinity Primus) would be a step up in sound quality because they are physically larger speakers. A lot depends on how much of an "audiophile" you think your bro is -- if he'd rather have small speakers for aesthetics at the expense of a little oomph, then either the Energy or Mirage mini sub/sat setups will work fine.

I would recommend the Pioneer series designed by Andrew Jones. For the cheapest, get the SP-BS21 bookshelf speakers all around, or pair with the dedicated center (sp-cs21). Newegg has occasional sales on these, sometimes down to $40 for a pair of the BS21. These are highly praised, award winning speakers--do not let the price fool you.

Hey batpig. Long time no talk! I live in the Houston area, so there is a Fry's near me. Those infinity primus speakers looks very nice. How do they compare to the Energy C-100's I have?

Thanks all of you for your input. I will be researching all of your recommendations!

newegg is killing me with these sales on the monitors... I got a baby due in January so I won't be able to crank them and enjoy them enough... but they really need to stop going on sale because it's killing me and I need not to hit buy.

Yep, the baby comes first. But by the time he/ she reaches about 6 years old you'll be able to do it while they play outside. Something to look foward to.
