Size Matters?

Hello.
I have been lurking on this site off and on for a year with my main focus on getting a nicer TV to replace my 42" Sharp LCD. It's about 3 years old. Anything I buy will be an upgrade.
Having said that I have done my research and with PQ being my top priority I decided a plasma is for me and I has my sights set on a Samsung PN51E7000. My problem is the size. I think a 55" would be the perfect size in my living room however that really only leaves me with a Panasonic for choices. At current pricing the 60" Samy is $1000 more than the 51"! I can't justify that. My question is am I really giving up that much in size with the 51" vs. a 55"? I am afriad of having regrets I didn't go a little bigger.
Problem two is breaking the news to my wife that we "need" a new tv tongue.gif I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.

Thanks. That was actually very helpful. So a 55" is 16% larger than a 51". That is pretty significant I think. That makes my decision even harder rather than easier because I really think the Samsung is a better TV. Why are the choices so scarce in plasma in the the 55" range? Ugh!!!

Obviously you're going through a decision process that is very subjective, the Samsung being better than the Panny. I just bought a 60" Panny GT50 and I honestly can't imagine the Samsung being better. Maybe just as good, but this TV is fantastic. So my thought since you'd be comparing the high end from each manufacturer, you're going to be very happy with a Panny that fits your size criteria needs better.

As eric7 said, assuming you don't get a defective unit, it's hard to imagine you could regret either. They're very nice looking TVs. Size is something a lot of people regret though. I was coming from a 47" which made 55" seem like it wasn't enough of an upgrade. And once I got to thinking 60", I convinced myself to just max it out at 65" and be done with it. Lol

Seriously though, I'm glad that I did. It was tough to look at the $800 increase from 55" to 65". But I'm also hoping it will last me five years like my 47" did. And I have no doubt that I'd have both second guessed myself and gotten upgrade fever a lot sooner with a smaller TV.

You're right. Both are very nice sets and it is very subjective. What I should have said is based on the reviews I have read, the Samsungs appeal to me more than the Panasonics.
They are certainly both high quality sets each with their own unique attributes.

Thanks. That's giving me a lot to think about. All my research on these particular sets so far has been reading. My next step is to get to the store and see them side by side.

I'm sitting in front of my 65" Panasonic thinking I need a bigger TV.

New house we're 5ft farther away than our old house and it looks almost tiny now.

I'd go bigger. I remember when we first put a 47 in the bedroom and thought it was huge, now we have a 55 and its just about right.

Looked at the new Sharp 90", great looking TV but too real, too clear, too sanitary. You could see the green screen effects so easily.

Go big...we'll go bigger once they come out with something larger comparable to our VT30.

Well what I am thinking of in terms of the comparison is the people that have the Samsung feel the picture is sharper and better shadow detail. It also uses less power than the Panasonic and also less reports of burn in. At least that is what I am getting from reading the individual threads on each TV, Also it's available right now under $1000. Damn you Samsung, why no 55"?!!!
