Cool stuff Kraine,

Yeah I usually use Super Res up to 3 as I found when I increased it to 5 I saw a few artifact. What I did though was tune the Sharpness in Advanced mode and found I got even better sharpness tuning that and using SR at 3 and that's with no artifacting. I just DI on normal as High sometimes gets to noisy.

The video from my Epson 5020 blanks out intermittently, for about 5 seconds, every 15 seconds or so when I have 2D-3D conversion selected. This blanking out also occurs when I am watching one of the 3D channels on DirecTV. Watching 3D on Blu Ray looks great with no noticeable Crosstalk (or image ghosting) and has no blanking problems. Has anyone else seen this blanking problem on their 5020 or 6020?

Great review Kraine!......I quite enjoyed reading your review. How did you find the misconvergence?...did it bother you from your seating postion?. Also regarding defocus....do you focus the lens after 30mins or more of being turned on and it stays that way...or did you have to do focus it all the time?

Do anyone know any other 3D glasses beside the Epson glasses for the 6020? I am looking a few more 3D glasses but I am leaning toward 3rd party glasses. The reason why is hopefully I can use them with different brands of projector also.

My 9100W (6020) will arrive in a week time and now I'm concerned.
Several reports of bad convergence, not able to be corrected with built-in panel alignment and replacement units have same issue. Bad luck?! Epidemic fault?!

Question: Is this only verified when ceiling mounting the pj?!
That may probably explain why it was not detected in expert reviews....

Advice on whether I should keep the Epson order is most welcome. Still on time to cancel and go for a HW50.

UPDATE (12/23/2012) :
It appears the video screen blanking when 2D-3D conversion is "ON" is related to the Darbee I am using. When I take the Darbee out of the video stream, the blanking goes away.

I am about to build a theater using the Epson 6020, and am wondering about the noise level. I am very sensitive to background white noise like that of a projector, but I haven't had one since my Sony VPL-HS10 which was loud. I am wondering if I need to build a hush box for this projector. During quiet scenes, I do not want to hear any projector noise, but perhaps I won't even without a hush box?

Anyone know if the Epson projectors (5020/6020) support TCP/IP control? If so, can you point me at the protocol documentation. Need to integrate with Crestron...

Just saw a review in Sound & Vision, and the Epson was called noticeably loud. While it's 3D performance bested the JVC X35, they considered the X35 better for it's unbelievably good contrast ratio and being so quiet. They did say the Epson had better color quality "out of the box" using it's THX mode.

If 3D is important, and saving about a grand, then I'd build the hush box. Just my 2¢.

A question for TW9100/6020 owners. On a couple of occasions now on start up the projector will run at high fan noise with flashing blue light and can take up to 3 or 4 minutes for the lens cover to open. It will then operate as normal. However the usual amount of time from switch on to the EPSON logo appearing is around 45 secs which is what I am assuming is normal. I am curious though as to what might be the cause of this intermittent extended start up period with high fan noise evident. Is it something other owners have experienced?.

I would call support. Mine takes 15 to 25 seconds.

Davestan, I briefly had an Epson 5020 before switching back to AE8000U. The Epson unit I had though, experienced a very similar problem. I tracked it down to the HDMI-Link function. When it was enabled, the projector slowed down by what seemed like a factor of 5. Kind of like when a computer is bogged down and refreshes the screen very slowly and takes forever to respond to keyboard and mouse input. In the case of the Epson, this made the projector power-up process extremely slow, which is what it sounds like you're experiencing.

When I turned HDMI-Link off, the projector behaved normally. Also, if I unplugged all HDMI connections, it would behave normally. It seemed like if I had an HDMI input connected, and HDMI-Link was on, the software that governs the HDMI-Link interaction with the source device had some kind of bug that was slowing down the rest of the projector's functions.

Try powering up without any HDMI connections. Also try powering up with HDMI connected, but the HDMI-Link function turned off. Would be curious to know if that makes a difference for you.

For me, I needed the HDMI-Link feature which is why I returned the 5020 and went back to the AE8000U, whose equivalent HDMI control function works fine.

Sorry for the noob question, but where do you set your sharpness to in advanced for maximum result?

I played around with it, but obviously went too far as it looked brilliant in light scenes & horrible in dark scenes.

I'm ordering my Epson 6020 this week.

Can you picture it shining on this?

There has been several posts (including here and the 5200UB thread) about using the Samsung SSG4100GB 3D glasses with these projectors. A few people have previously asked if anyone has tried the newer SSG5100GB glasses, that apparently are replacing the 4100's. I assume the newer model would work at least as well as the older model Samsung glasses, but I still have not seen anyone saying they have actually used the newer model glasses with their Epson projector. So I'm asking the question again - has anyone tried the SSG5100GB glasses with their Epson projector?

If it helps anyone, we have our 6020 paired with a Screen Innovations 1.4 gain 110" Black Diamond screen. Our room can go fully blackout, so I wasn't sure whether I wanted some of the trade-offs that come with that level of gain. The throw distance is about 16 feet. I've been up and running for about two months now, testing things out and learning how it all works together. Some of my tweaks have been good, and we watched a couple of very different Blu Rays recently -- Downton Abbey and Enterprise, for example -- and the wife and I both thought "Wow".

Which takes us to yesterday, when Jeff Meier (AccuCal) came by for a full-on calibration. Oh my. Game changer. We were impressed with the Epson / SI pairing all along, but the color and clarity we saw that first night after Jeff did his work was astonishing.

The native THX color on the Epson / SI screen combination was good from the start. I had also made some minor changes that had helped. Jeff acknowledged we were starting in a good place, and then went on to make major changes and improvements in the color, gamma and overall light levels. The combined impact of all of those changes raised the 6020's measured light output by > 20%, while still allowing it to run in Eco mode, keeping the unit very quiet and extending bulb life. The image color now is just exceptional.

Then he got into dialing in convergence and focus. It took the better part of an hour and was worth every second. The before and after on that part alone was way beyond what I thought was possible. I knew while he was working that we were making a quantum leap, but last night I was able to soak in the color, light and convergence work he had done. He has calibrated other displays for me in the past, so my expectations were high. Despite that, I am just blown away.

I won't speak for Jeff, but as most of you knows he sees tons of displays all over the country. I think he sees the 6020 as a best in class performer, and in my particular room, he really liked the Screen Innovations / Epson pairing. I had been forced to make that pairing decision here locally, without his help, so it was a huge relief that those decisions had been good ones.

Below is a screen background report that may help some of you work through the trade-offs that can come with amping up gain and using different kinds of screen materials.

I have some handshake / signal loss issues in my Epson video chain when I try to install a matrix switch or splitter.

The stable chain has a Dish Network 722k Satellite Receiver and a Panasonic BluRay player DMP-BDT110 > Pioneer VSX-1120 A/V Receiver > Epson 6020.

That chain becomes unstable when I introduce a Matrix Switch or, more simply, an HDMI Splitter into the chain in-between the Dish and/or Panasonic sources and the Pioneer AVR, so that I can serve a second HD display from those two sources. Handshake issues and signal drops occur regularly on the Epson. No problems observed so far on the second Television, an LG 65LM6200.

If anyone with an Epson is experiencing handshake or signal loss issues, it would be useful to post details here.

It looks great when I keep things simple. But what's the fun in that?

Initially had some issues with my 6010, mainly with 3D sources, but here are some things to try, with swapping out cabling/devices as a last resort.

Try turning deep color off on the Panny, set the AVR to pass through if you can, and power up the components in different order sequence, down the chain and reversing that order if necessary. Allow each component several seconds to acknowledge the handshake. Last thing is to try cable changes. Introducing a splitter or another type of device can degrade the signal just enough to cause an issue. If your using any cable shorter than 6', you may need to get swap those out to at least 6' or longer as shorter ones may introduce feedback. Sometimes they don't pose a problem, but you'll have to test. If your splitter is an issue, you might have to try a different brand. Hopefully one of those suggestions can help.
