How to set up my PC games for discrete 5.1 Dolby?

Hello all,

I have a DVD HTS that can output both DTS and Dolby 5.1, and I have connected my PC to the HTS via an optical cable. When I playback a BD, the Pro Logic II mode is disabled and the PC player decodes the source 5.1 to all the individual speakers correctly. The same happens during PS3 gaming.

However, during all the PC games I have tried, despite in the settings having the 5.1 option automatically set, the HTS Pro Logic II option is enabled and thus I don't seem to get an actual 5.1 to all the speakers as the games' 5.1 audio (I believe) are designed for. I feel like I am only getting a pseudo 5.1...

So can anyone let me know what I should do to get actual 5.1 on PC games as I get on BD and PS3 games?

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK you can't get 5.1DD in games, not unless your soundcard supports realtime DD transcoding over SPDIF output.

You seem to be correct, thanks.

Now may I ask since my HTS supports DTS, would Asus Xonar DS sound card, which only encodes DTS (and not Dolby Live) would be fine? I have heard that Dolby Digital Live only sends 640 kbps to all the 6 channels through SPDIF, whereas DTS (via DTS Connect) sends 1.5 mbps to the 6 channels.

Can anyone clarify on this claim?

I have no idea about the Asus Xonar DS card. Perhaps you should go to their web/support page and check things out there?

If your receiver doesn't have HDMI at this point, it would probably be easier just to upgrade. Many games support multiple PCM channel output through DirectSound over HDMI.

All my games output 5.1 or 7.1 over HDMI (NVIDIA 680 card). Just plug into receiver, set windows to 7.1, boom. Done.

Now with STEAM Big Picture MOde it is really easy

If I may ask, what does Steam Big Picture Mode have to do with multichannel HDMI audio confused.gif
