Hi
I got Sky+HD installed this weekend and was looking forward to connecting it to my Home Cinema System for 5.1 surround. My Home cinema is a fair bit older, doesn't accept hdmi or optical input but still produces a good sound so I'm reluctant to replace unnecessarily. It is a Phillips HTS3500S http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HTS3500S-Multichannel-Cinema-playback/dp/B00096J3GW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Knowing this I read up on forums that you can use a Digital to analogue converter to hook them up, use an optical lead to output from the Sky box, into the converter, then output using Coaxial cables (Red and White) into the Audio in on the Amp to listen to the Sky sound via Aux. I've had the converter bought in advance and only just got the chance to try it this weekend. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0038M3ID8/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
Sadly the sound doesn't work correctly at all. The Sound doesn't output at all with the Sky box set to output through the optical lead in 'Dolby Digital', though when it's set to 'Normal' it does output sound but very quietly. The fact that sound comes through at all leads me to believe that the optical lead works (the red LED shines through as it should). When connected from the Sky box directly to the Amp the Coaxial leads pumps sound into the Amp but only simulated 5.1 not true Surround.
Does anyone have any ideas how to correct this? I'm beginning to think that the converter is faulty and may need correcting but I could do with some input on how to solve this. I've never used optical cables before but they only fit one way and if sound was travelling into the system (when set to 'normal') that would lead me to believe that I'd connected everything correctly.
Any help/advice would be gratefully received!
