A couple of questions

1. If BR discs were anamorphic, would it be simple to go to a 2:35 to 1 format?

2. Did HD-DVD offer an anamorphic content?

I'm new to front projectors. As soon as the Mits RP set wears out, I was thinking (in fact I have my theater room wired) for front projection. My choice would be a JVC DILA fp. I'm making an assumption that FP is still the best picture available.

Currently, Blu-rays are not anamorphic. They have 1920x1080 square pixels.

No. It worked the same as Blu-ray.

Yes because all the required scaling would be done at the encode of the disc. All you would need is to add an A-lens.

Have a read of the link rboster has added to his post above. I hope they have a win with that.

I would certainly hope so. I read the thread, and I was shocked to realize that BR discs were not anamorphic.

I had thought that the reason there was no 2:35 to 1 without bars was because when the whole HD standard started the only thing available were CRT TVs.
And no TV CRT could scan a beam that far left to right. Obviously, I was wrong.

Ok..so if the Blu Rays were to coming in 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio already..the A Lens will always be needed in the future, unless a PJ could project it natively. correct?

I'm not sure, but I think one anamorphic lens could handle most of the viewing ratios. That's if BR was anamorphic.

DVD was essentially a bridging format from 4 x 3 to 16:9. To do this, it used non square pixels where each format (PAL and NTSC) had 720 horizontal pixels, but their height changed to keep the AR 1.33. PAL has 576 and NTSC has 480 (or is that 483?). BD is native 16:9 and uses square pixels. Because it was made for the HD standard of 1920 x 1080, it has a perfect 1:1 matrix of 1920 x 1080. There is simply no need for this format to use anamorphic encoding at the level it was originally designed for.

I would love to see anamorphic encoding used because it would allow wider formats to be integrated into the existing format as well as supporting all ARs down to 1.2:1.
