Having my Steam library, as well as things like MAME and a library of classic console games/emulators available through an HTPC-style interface would be quite awesome.
You correctly point out that with simple off-the-shelf hardware being able to play back all the media that an HTPC can while costing way less makes the HTPC largely irrelevant for most people. It's the things beyond media playback that really seem to keep interest in this segment alive.

What's the controller issue ?

I thought most just use an xbox360 controller ?

Someone (the OP) is obviously butt hurt that everyone does not blindly bow down to his demands. smile.gif

There's rumors of a Steam game controller and a Steam box. I get a lot of questions about Steam Big Picture and emulators for HTPC -- in a different forum of course.

I am a mouse and keyboard player... That is why I use my desktop.

My HTPC is great for NES and SNES emulation though.

Oh please. I am married. I am used to not being listened to. wink.gif

I guess this is the new AVS. I will conform.

Right there with you. I just found out that we're going to continue using WMC because XBMC doesn't change channels fast enough. I was incorrect in thinking that everyone likes to look at guide data before switching channels

I like the balance you provide. Just don't take things so personally. It's just PC talk, not life or death.wink.gif

+1

I don't take things personal. This thread was mainly just for fun and I laughed pretty hard at times. Evidently some people took it or me too seriously. Some of the feedback was great.

My days on the internet sites including AVS are limited though whether I like it or not. I have big changes coming and the time just isn't going to be there. Time is going to be at an ultra premium for me.

I laughed when I saw this thread.. probably the first time I actually laughed at a thread starting out. biggrin.gif You did good. I stayed out and let it go a while, laughing all the while.

AVS has a pretty serious demeanor and business like approach. I might not fit in as well. I often type like I am texting, and post impulsively. I take it very informally. I don't even bother using the built in spell check even though it is right there in front of me.tongue.gif

Ever been to a younger male oriented forum like the MISC section at Bodybuilding.com - Almost every thread is just pure laughs. I'm getting a little too old for that but it was fun back in the days. Forums that do not censor or give our infractions are pretty funny.

This forum needs some good humor sometimes. AVS in general. It's full of geeks, but lots of geeks have a awkward sense of humor I don't understand. lol.

In contrast- I once posted a you tube video and thread for it that switched to getting Rick Rolled in this forum and received an infraction with a comment "not welcomed at AVS"

haha...

Eh, some games can map easily enough to a 360 controller, but there really has yet to be a viable replacement for mouse+keyboard for most games. One reason there hasn't been much in the way of cross-platform multiplayer is simply because PC players would dominate console players - the mouse is just so much more accurate. Unfortunately, using a mouse+keyboard while sitting on a couch is not a very effective solution.

Give it time, she will eventually tell you to go have "alone time" on the PC, time she then spends knitting or some other girl thing. wink.gif

I have been married over 25 years now. smile.gif

Nah, you just have to accept people hitting back as hard as you hit. smile.gif Personally, I find it great fun.

Same here. 100%. I'll NEVER use a controller. But I now have a quite capable HTPC as well, and that's why I built myself a lapboard. PC gaming on the big screen was never easier!

Well how in the heck have I never seen that before? My wife is not going to be happy - now I have the itch to go ahead and upgrade my HTPC to be fully gaming capable...

Congrats, dude. biggrin.gif (if that means what it usually means when someone says that -- if not then, sorry to hear that frown.gif. )

I think he already has kids. Perhaps I am wrong.

Correct. 2 kids actually.

Also correct on the job/career guess (which btw has absolutely nothing to do with HTPC or tech)

I know man....it's awesome. Playing Skyrim, BF3, all that stuff on the big screen is awesome. You gotta try it.

This is why HTPC and gaming PC are so cross over friendly... geeks and gamers are more likely to build a HTPC than normal people. The attraction of playing on a big screen and theater sound system is significant.

Totally agreed. I still have my main gaming rig. But now that my HTPC is also gaming-capable...its opened a whole new can of worms! Good worms.

I don't game on my HTPC simply because I am a mouse and keyboard player and I am very particular about that. I have a $60 Razer mousepad- Razer gaming mouse- and a Razer keyboard with Macros on the fly. I enjoy the high amount of control. Can't get that sitting on a couch with a lap pad.

While some games will probably never work as well sitting on a couch with a lap pad as they do sitting at a desk, I do intend to try this setup out at some point. The funds for a gaming-capable HTPC are not going to show up for awhile - need to buy another set of hard drives for the server first, and my wife's desktop is getting long in the tooth. Oh, and then there's all those other expenses like "rent" and "utilities".. and don't even get me started on that "food" nonsense. Why must this hobby be expensive? frown.gif
