What is your preferred option for converting 5.1 to 7.1 with Surround Back?

I recently bought an Onkyo TX-NR818 and wonder what the preferred option for converting 5.1 to 7.1 with Surround Back is. My receiver does Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS Neo:X, THX Select2 Cinema, and THX Surround EX for accomplishing this. It may have other modes that I have not found. My receiver also does Audyssey DSX, but I think that only adds Front Wide and Front Height speakers, and not Surround Back speakers.

Btw, I would like the settings for watching movies.

Those two THX modes extract a mono surround-back channel from the surround channels, sending the same content to both rear speakers. By comparison, PLIIx and Neo:X extract stereo surround-back channels, so the rear speakers contain independent info rather than being run in dual-mono.

With that in mind, my preferred option is for PLIIx and Neo:X instead of the THX modes. Of the two preferred options, I don't find much difference when using them to scale 5.1 channels to 7.1 speakers. I would lean towards PLIIx because the stereo separation in the rear speakers is a little more distinct.

Will PLIIx or Neo:X degrade lossless TrueHD, DTS HD MA, or PCM tracks, or will they simply steer the lossless audio to the Surround Back speakers?

I've set PL Iix 2 years ago and it truly enhances the 5.1 into 7.1 quite well.

The latter. Lossless audio doesn't stop being lossless when you apply bass management, time alignment, surround processing, room correction, etc.
