IYO, good 5.1 vs amazing 2.1...which is more worthy IYO?

I'm deciding whether to downgrade the amount of speakers I have, while starting anew and getting excellent bookshelf speakers (to be used with a sub) for a stereo only system.

So for you all, which is more exciting and better? A good surround system or an amazing stereo only escapade?

Hard to say without knowing your background, but since you asked I can only tell you my story. I came from a 2 ch stereo system (which was setup for music only) + TV with own built-in speakers to a surround system that handles music and film together. Take a look at my setup (in my sig), it's awesome for both music listening and movie watching. I would never go back to 2 ch stereo anymore.

Yeah, hard to know for sure. I tend to go for quality over quantity even if, all things being equal, I have a marked preference for surround.
