LG 55LM5800/5850 Owner's Thread

I’ve been a lurker on this site for several years. I’ve read nearly all the posts on last year’s LW series and all this year’s threads on the LM6200, 6700, 7600, and 8600 series TV’s. I have been following the “Missing Trumotion “, thread with great interest also.
Last week I was in Costco Canada and saw a deal that I could not pass up. It was for the LM5850, a model that after all my research I was not familiar with. Although I hadn’t read anything about this TV I knew that it would be similar to the rest of the LM series but at a lower price point and therefore fewer features; and should share both their strengths and weaknesses. I was not too far wrong and so far I am pleased with my purchase. I think it’s a keeper.
If there are any other owners of this series out there, and there must be some because this TV was flying of the shelves at Costco, I would be interested in hearing from you so that we can share our thoughts and findings.

I guess there aren't too many people out there with this tv.

Anybody out there. I would love to hear from some other owners of these models. I've had the LM5850 for over a week now and am still quite happy in most respects. Im slowly getting the picture to where I like it.

Just changed the name of this thread in the hopes that it will attract some interest. There must be some owners of these LG models out there.

Based on many posts in various threads the 120Hz claim is debatable. It appears that most of the 2012 LM series models, except for the LM6200.7600,8600, and 9600, do not have Trumotion fully implemented either. Despite this I am very pleased with my LM5850.

I should be able to post my settings by tomorrow morning. At the present time I have only used the WOW disc to calibrate the settings for the BP420 that came with my LM5850. I have not as yet adjusted the settings for my PS3, but I could do it soon.
Keep in mind that the adjustments you make to your settings in the 2D mode do not apply to 3D. When a 3D signal is detected the TV automatically defaults to the standard setting with an increased backlight intensity that doesn't appear to be adjustable. You can however adjust both the contrast and brightness, but only before starting the 3D movie. Other settings might be adjustable but it is very difficult to tell when it's not possible to do on the fly.

As promised here are my calibration settings for my LM5850 using the Disney WOW disc played through an LG BP420 bluray player.
All adjustments were made in a semi darkened room. The only light source is a 13W 5000K CFL light bulb mounted about 9 inches behind the TV and about 1 foot in front of the wall. This is my best attempt at bias lighting.

HDMI 2
Energy Saving: Minimum (I could probably get the same backlight results by adjusting the dedicated backlight setting but I found this reduced my bleed on all inputs.)
Backlight: 40 (This can be changed depending on ambient lighting and user preference. Based on the WOW disc it does not affect the other calibration settings.
Contrast: 97
Brightness: 56
H Sharpness: 48
V Sharpness: 48
Color: 53
Tint: R3

Expert Control:
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Noise Reduction: Off
Digital Noise Reduction: Off
Black Level: Low
Color Gamut: BT709 (Not sure if this setting makes much difference. Still playing with it.)
Edge Enhancer: Low
Color Filter: Off
Color Temperature: Warm
Gamma: 2.4 ( Still playing with this settng also. Even when set at 2.4 the ideal gamma of 2.2 is not reached according to WOW)
All other settings are left unchanged.

As I mentioned in my previous post these settings are only good for 2D. I will do a calibration using my PS3 and post those settings in a few days.

I ran the WOW calibration disc on my PS3 this morning. Other than a few minor changes the settings were generally the same. Something I forgot to mention in my previous post, and is quite important, is that the Aspect Ratio must me set to "Just Scan".

That's it. Like I said not much difference between the two Blu-ray players. For some reason Gamma looked a little closer to ideal with the PS3. Considering this TV is at the lower range of the LM line it passes most of the tests extremely well.

Based on many comments made in various treads it's debatable as to whether the lower LM models are actually 120Hz.

Thanks for the info bargugl. It would be nice if LM5800 and 4600 owners could get some of the features the LM6200 model has. I believe the 6200 can make changes to the picture settings on the fly while playing 3D for example.

This thread gives you the complete saga of the missing Trumotion feature on the lower tier 2012 LG models. I also have the 55LM5850 and was initially upset that LG could get away with this false advertising. However, for what I paid for the TV I'm for the most part happy.

I somehow doubt we will see a firmware update to include Trumotion. Owners of the LM6700 did get a partial fix after hdguru posted this article:

As this article points out this is not a 120Hz panel but a 60Hz. But again for what I paid for the TV with the excellent BP420 blu-ray player thrown in I'm very happy with it. Now if I had bought the LM6700 for $1200 or $1300 I would probably have a different opinion.
