Dual GJALLARHORNs! - Page 5

I didn't even build my own...Buying the materials and having a professional cabinet place do them was well worth the money for me. I enjoy building my own stuff for sure but that was hours and hours of my own time saved that I could devote to other things.

You smoked some SI drivers N8? You must have been giving it to them.
Yup, the SI's are toast haha. They bit the dust on the "scary christmas" dub track I always demo. It's a sub monster killer at high volumes for sure! I was kind of surprised they cooked on the first big bass note. Ahh well, what ya gonna do haha.
I've just got to find a cab place that will be willing to take on 4 of these big boys lol! The pfd looks a bit scary but really it's not THAT bad. It may be a bit over my head but I'm sure after building 1, you rip through the others pretty quick. I have no problem with paying someone else to do the build! lol.
Thought Ricci, does the driver go in before it's all put together? or can I make an access hole. I'd hate to think it's stuck in there is something ever went wrong.
Yeah there is an access cover....take the driver in and out that way.
Oh ok, I must have missed it in the plans. Thanks!

less than 1000 watts?!! what size enclosure were they in?
Ya, the PDF is tough due to all the decimals rather than the common fractional nomenclature.
It is perfect for the CNC machine, not so much for the DIYer in the garage.

It's a nice size one too. You could easily get a 21" driver through the hole.

The last decimal of precision is not really necessary to build them. The nth degree of precision isn't really necessary as small variances won't do much. Yeah, not an easy or cheap cab by any means but that is what you get when you try to fit as much power potential as possible into a specific amount of space.

I am still waiting on the UXL's to come out here in Australia for this build. It has been many months having the plans and still waiting. Wont be till April maybe that they arrive here. And with void free 18mm costing $120 it is still a slow process.

Is it common for everyone to find a CNC that can do all the angles?

I found that many of the CNC companies here only do straight cuts. Not sure why. How big is your room Luke?

My room is 11ft wide, 29ft long, and has 8ft ceilings.

I hear ya, just like to be as accurate as possible, It's really not that bad.

BB plywood is here:

I am jealous!

Is that 5 sheets of 5x5 per cab?

Wow...That is only 2500 cubes. eek.gif
Luke are you going to CNC this subwoofer or build yourself?

I am not familiar on how to do the exterior panel cuts. They all match up great but my wood working skills are not that good. SO I wondered how you were going to attempt this. And maybe you will have lots of pictures if you do. I may just end up doing normal but joints myself with pocket screws for all panels.

5 sheets of 5x5 18mm and 2 sheets of 12mm. for one complete Ghorn. I will be using 8x4 sheets so four for me.
If anyone is in the SoCal area let me know. I have a CNC and would be more than happy to let it slice and dice for a while.

These 5 sheets are enough to get me started on both. I hadn't bought BB from this supplier before, so I didn't want to order all the sheets at once in case the quality wasn't on par. This plywood seems to be pretty good. It's not as high quality as the stuff from Rockler, but Rockler doesn't have sheets large enough, and it's way more expensive.

Yeah, the room is pretty small.

No CNC machine for me. Even if I had access to one I wouldn't use it. I've learned a lot the last couple years building speaker cabinets, and doing all the work yourself forces you to get creative sometimes.

I'll definitely take a lot of pictures, and tomorrow I'm picking up a table saw!

Color me jealous. I'll be watching this one smile.gif

I'm in SoCal. What would something like this cost to cut?
I'm in so cal and would like to build one of these guys. Cnc'd cuts would be awesome!

"If anyone is in the SoCal area let me know. I have a CNC and would be more than happy to let it slice and dice for a while."

that is really cool. what kind of machine? just out of curiousity, is it difficult to program a cut plan? for example, if somebody uses a panel optimizer, then sends a file with the panel layout, is it a great big pain to program a cut plan or is it relatively trivial? and last annoying question, is it 2d or can edges of panels be cut on an angle?

i've been thinking that with all the cnc machines around having a portable cut plan file that folks can share around for complex builds like this one makes a ton of sense.

Man, that would be sweet! Ugh, no one around here!

Man, this thread certainly has my attention. biggrin.gif

Question though: What makes the cabinet so complex/difficult to construct?

I suppose I will hit up Josh for the plans to see for myself.

Take a look at the pictures:

Lots of angles!
yeah the pictures make it look a little intimidating to build
post #146 of 517
I wish Erich would try to get these done via his CNC contact. Of course, it may be too cost prohibitive to ship as a flat pack anyway.

A CNC cut flat pack for this sub would weigh well over 200lb's to ship...

Exactly, although the DTS-10 flatpack to include the drivers was decent to ship and it was 285 lbs.

The problem would also be packing, etc.

iirc, ricci designed the gh to fit a form factor.

by allowing for a different form factor with approximately the same total enclosure volume, the build could probably simplified quite a bit.

we designed a pretty big one that worked ok for the lms-r and, as it turned out, the ultra.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1420594/hornsub-with-lms-r-how-to-construct/30

something of that form factor could probably designed to play slightly lower like the gh and simplify the build.

i haven't examined the gh closely lately, so maybe, maybe not...

Have you guys ever modeled the LMS ultra in a 760 liter cab with an 8 inch 37 inch long port?
