Did anyone test this cab with any other drivers?

Hmmm, I am contemplating building a pair as well as have my buddy build a couple. However, it would be nice if there were some cheaper driver options.

These just aren't like sealed or vented cabs where you can pretty much schlep any old driver in there and get something listenable or good. Horns just aren't like that and these are not cabs that work with cheaper drivers. The compression is too high and cheap drivers just don't have enough motor power, thermal handling and/or displacement to work well. There is a reason the coil and ass end of a 5400 is so massive. There are a couple of candidates that appear to work but the two that I can definitely reccomend at this point are the 5400 and the UXL-18 from Mach 5. I know those work. If you want to save a little cash the UXL should be very close to the Ultra with perhaps a bit higher distortion. Another one that looked worth testing was the Kicker Solo-X 18 (square frame last version). But it is discontinued, weighs like 100lbs, and is expensive. The cheapest thing I have found that looks alright in the simulation is the AudioQue HDC3. Unfortunately I have never used the driver and have no idea whether those specs are representative of actual shipping product, what it's actual excursion limits are, how bad the inductance is (I expect a giant 50Hz peak to be honest which would throw the whole model off.), etc.. I just don't know. It may be possible to use multiple smaller drivers like 3-4 10's or 2-3 twelves but I haven't gone to the extent of modeling any of that.

There are plenty of horns developed for more cost effective drivers. Lil mike has a few, Bill has the THT's, the DTS-10 is still available, etc...Most of those are easier to build as well.

As far as I know I have the only two GH's in existence currently. There are a couple wild Othorn's out there and I have had a lot of interest in these plans but virtually every person that asks about it wants to find a $250 driver that works and there aren't any. I don't know of anyone who has built these yet for sure.

Where can I get the plans for this beast? I've got a very good friend that wants to build the biggest, baddest horn he can find, I think this baby would fit the bill! hahaha
We'd of course be using the UXL. Heck maybe I'll build on for fun!

I hear you. I already have a THT and a DTS-10 as well as a pair of sealed LMSs. I was just interested in building a pair of something else for the next project.

I realize the demands horns have on drivers and the specificity required. I was just hoping their might be a moderately cheaper and tested alternative to the LMS so that I could con my buddy into building a pair for himself...since he has all the woodworking gear in a heated garage. He does not seem eager to blow $1800 on drivers. Some people are not fully into the ranks of the bass addicted yet.
I would definitely opt for the LMSs for my own cabs in any alignment, however not all of us have the cash to spare.

I really appreciate your willingness to share the fruits of your efforts with the DiY community. If you are still willing to share I would love to get the detailed plans.
I am strongly considering unloading my DTS-10 and putting in a pair of some other horn loaded sub in its place.

The UXL is cheaper, it would save you $500 and likely have 95% of the performance (at least they do real world in sealed boxes)

Sweet! It sounds like that might be the way to go for the economically challenged. Hell, I may even try one myself and compare the two.

I am not familiar with the UXL or iST. It looks like they are out of stock at the moment, is that typical?

It looks like it is pretty impressive with the 34mm xmax for the price...nice BL too!

You've sent me the plans (thanks!), and I have the LMS (x2) drivers... now it's just a matter of finding the right builder to 'help' me out with it. I have minimal woodworking skills and tools, enough to probably produce a workable sealed cab, but this project is definitely beyond my reach.

Hoping to have at least a single get going soon though.

The Kicker Solo-X 18s are around $700 on ebay. Looks like a damn mean driver, although 24.5mm Xmax seems low.

Mark is waiting for his shipment of cones to arrive. Check it out on data-bass. It's on par to what the LMS can do according to Ricci's tests.

Good to know that it is not vaporware.

Looks pretty impressive overall. Maybe a touch more THD but multiples help that too.

Joey likey! At the two for one price, it would be hard to pass up even for me being a huge LMS fan.

He doesn't need the horn to be the size of a semi trailer! lol The size of this looks like it will be perfect to build 2 and have them along his back wall. I've not seen the inlow Sound design, got a link?

Without having poured over the drawings...how many 4x8 sheets of each (18mm, 12mm) material are required?

I wish I had room for these cabinets. The moment I saw them, I wanted to build them. Josh seems to have found something that can reall rip! Go with the LMS and crank it- you won't be disappointed. I heard the TH-50 a few years back and Josh says these smash those, so you will be very happy with the performance. Go for it. I might even try to find some space for them myself.

Well my friend is looking into building 2 and I figure I may as well do 2 as well lol. We are starting on Monday to find the CNC to cut the wood and are going to try all 4 in his room once we get them built. We don't really have a time frame as I can't really build yet as it WAY to cold out but I have lots of carpenter friends who I'm sure I could get to have their workers at them shops build them for us as most guys aren't very busy now since it's so cold ( -44c with the windchill 2 days ago lol)

Getting it done via CNC would be the way to go provided the costs are not exorbitant.
It would save a ton of time and shivers too.

I'm not really worried about the costs, they are what they are. I'm figuring (having had CNC stuff done before) that with good quality wood, all 4 cabs will likely be around $1500-$1800 for wood and cutout. I'm fine with that. I'm busy enough at work that I don't really feel like doing much after I get home. I've got 4 x 18" boxes sitting in my basement that I'm waiting on drivers so I can install and get rid of them. I've had 2 SI's go up in smoke with less than 1000 watts each. What a bummer, I was not very impressed with their quality at all but I guess you get what you pay for...

I am almost there myself. Sometimes, money just can't replace the time. I enjoy building things on occasion, but doing it in this weather is not pleasant.
The problem is that we live in an area with very little industry close by, so finding a CNC shop here is going to be challenging for me. Ugh!

I'm lucky as there are quite a few around. I'd be fine with building them myself but cutting all that wood...... I hate even the though of having to do 4 cabs hahahaha

I hear ya there. Doing 4 would be a lot of cutting.
