Pretty good first sub right there. Definitely respectable. HSU VTF 15h was my first. Then dual Seaton Submersives. I won't share my whole story since I have already. The infrasonic is a bit of a love hate right now. I love it and have seen its value in supporting the main bass, 30-60. But my rental home just vibrates at like 12hz like an SOB. Like Pacific Rim was a great bass movie, it just didn't have the infrasonic. Now I believe that doesn't ruin it. It was still great and fun. I don't see why some people think a movie is ruined if it doesn't have infrasonic. 18hz down... The best Way I can describe it is like a vanilla ice cream come. You love vanilla ice cream cones. But you also love a cherry dipped vanilla cone even more. You get where I am going. THE BEST REPRESENTATION I have found is the Incredible Hulk. Find the graphs, watch and you will see. I do look forward to my new wife and I buying A home and me getting a dedicated room. A newer built properly constructed and treated room. one that won't rattle like it does now

I would think some of the Triax owners would share their paths.. There have quite a few of them this pass couple months. Especially the ones that bought one first. Then decided to get a second or more a few weeks later. Or anyone who has been upgrading before price increases coming New Year..

Timeline

1995 - Infinity 5.1 Sattelite Speakers with Sub (This was a rattler... didnt handle bass well)
2000 - Purchased Paradigm Studio 100s with whatever subwoofer at the time was produced by them in that range. I don't remember the model
2007 - Axiom Audio 7.2 Epic 80 Set - Subs were Axiom EP500s. I have since had the amplifiers updated with the later backplanes/firmware
2014 - Seaton Submersive HP+ & HP Slave

About my Journey
I purchased my first home theater components when I was on my way to college in 1994. I had worked at Circuit City that summer to save the money for the individual parts and also wanted to use my employee discount. The infinity sattelite speakers I had sounded good enough, especially for a dorm room, but the subwoofer was crap. It rattled all of the time and it drove me nuts. I also purchased a Laser Disk player the moment I heard about Dolby AC-3, and my first disc was Clear and Present Danger, the first title to be shipped in the "Dolby Digital" format. I still remember having so many movie nights at school, and people in my dorm joked whenever we had a power outage or brownout that I must be turning on my electronics again... After I graduated I wanted to upgrade, and moved to a projection TV and a set of Paradigm Studio speakers (100s main, center, sub, and surrounds) which I kept in my first couple of homes. I still own these speakers. I built my first dedicated home theater in 2007 (Even did some basic research here in the forums and made a few posts) and then I purchased an Axiom Audio Epic 80 Set, along with a pair of EP500 subs. These subs put out a lot more bass then my old system and in fact they were too loud in my last room. There was an issue with the volume knobs on both amps where it would jump in volume if you just touched the volume knobs with your finger. They were THAT sensitive. Since then that issue was corrected, but I also never did EQ correction and very little room treatments. I moved to my latest house in 2011 and when I moved, I took my Axiom speakers with me. My old Paradigm speakers and old projector stayed in the old house, which I am now renting out, so they were nice to have. I completed my latest theater in november of 2011 with the help of BIGMouthInDC (Jeff) and posted my entire build progress here as well. I like the sound of the Axiom speakers in this theater, but the room has a lot of absorption and due to the false wall, I don't have a lot of wiggle room for speaker placement. In hindsight, I should have kept a space for a sub in the rear center of the room. The subs do put out good bass in the new room but just below what I'd like.

So today (12/26/13) I ordered a pair of Seaton Submersive Subs, and sold my Axiom Subs to a fellow AVS member. They should ship out in the first week or so of January.

Around 1984 or 85 (I was 14 or 15 ) I bought a Yamaha powered sub .Not sure what model number but it had an oval woofer not round like the sales guy said. Brought it home and could not believe how bad it sounded. I returned it .

In 1986 I bought an original VMPS sub and in 1991 bought a second one . Had it powered with a QSC PLX 1600 and a Paradigm X-30 crossover. I always thought it sounded better than a lot of subs but was never tight enough sounding for me.

A month ago I bought a JTR Orbit Shifter biggrin.gif It sounds the way I always thought a sub should sound !

I like to say "Never say never " but at this time , one is enough. ( sure I'd love another someday ! ) Carroll Shelby one said " a little too much power is just right " . The same holds true for subwoofers , speakers and power . . . I did hear two at lbrown105 's GTG and it was insane cool.gif

My weak link right now is my room , in need of a lot of room treatments . Then a better receiver , and maybe a projector.

I don't have the budget that some of the guys around here have so my up grades take a while but I have more time to research the next upgrade .smile.gif

It's a good thing we went with the subs first in the JTR line. Looks like the subs got the price increase for Jan.1. The subs got the most increase. Which is about right considering JTR subs are just badass!

And jlpowell84 (to long to quote)..

Thanks guys. It is because of this thread and a few others I decided to shorten the path a little. Seems better to go big early smile.gif

Like Beeman is fond of saying, I already have my eye on another.

Even with 4x 18" dayton HOs I'm sure I'm not done. But I get physically ill listening to the ones I have for too long... Love bass. Maybe I need to try ported for more physical tactile feeling. I know you guys with Jtr caps and shifters are enjoying that couch shaking and walls coming down feeling. There's more to bass than charts and graphs...has to be smile.gif

Maybe if you add two more.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter the world of subwoofers. It doesn't stop.

If the timbers are not shivered, more power needs to be applied Scottie.

There needs to be a cartoon where the subwoofer system is equal to the effect.

(the house blows up on the screen and the house the subwoofer system is in, blows up)

"Now that's what I'm talking about."

And I'm strangely okay with this concept.

Toymachyne.. I know what you mean.. I have this crazy thought lingering in my mind. Coming April. I'll be flying up to Illinois for the Axpona. Then drive up to Wisconsin to JTR headquarters. To demo, decide, and purchase my LCR and surrounds. Im thinking of adding 2 more S2's to the package if the price is right. Or if not 2 more S1's if the wifey gets a little crazy on me.. Just want to make sure I'm done for real after that.. Lol

Do not even let the wife stand between you and the S2s. You need to take her out, get her drunk and explain to her you plan. Sometimes, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and sometimes a man has to get his wife drunk so he can take advantage of her.

...eek.gif

Just saying.

...tongue.gif

We both know, if you don't buy the S2s, you won't be done.

Contemplating backing the Matterhorn up to my downstairs door that opens into the theater. First sonic cannon blast should level my house immediately. If it can cause avalanches from 200 yards, I am confident in it's ability to break structures when you are only 20 feet away.

Get her drunk? It'll make the conversation worse..eek.gif In the end she'll probably say, we don't need 6 subwoofers in the house. The " I want to move.." "We need to save to move and build a home in the up coming 1-2 years from now.." answers comes out. But.. What I was planning to do is.. While we're up at Jeffs shop trying to deal about LCR+surrounds speakers. And my wife is with me after the demo.. Example.. "OK Jeff, How much would you give us for the 3 212's, 4 stanted 8's, and 2 S2's for?" biggrin.gifwink.gif

Haha, I wish man. Just joking around....for the most part........

My journey I listed a while back, but it was basically:

1)Single NHT-10

2) single then double LilMike's F-20 cinema horns with tempest X-2 15's

3) Tempest X-2's then went into dual 25 cuft LLT sonotubes tuned to 12hz

4) Two sealed RE XXX18's then added two jbl 4648's

5) 8 sealed SI18ht's and added the RE XXX18's back in with a ported infinite baffle

6) Next looking to add back the 4648's as well for MBM's but I am running out of room fast... biggrin.gif So that would end up being 10x18's and 4x15's. That should cover me for a bit
post #627 of 663
I don't know my actual timeline as I switch out stuff so often but I'll just make a list of some of what I had. 1999-Present

First sub was a quest 8" - at the time, I though it was a monster lol
Paradigm ps1000 - was completely blown away at the time
Paradigm pw2200 - was pretty happy but had heard a servo 15 as a meet and fell in love
Paradigm servo 15v1 ( Then 5 months later, a second servo 15) - was pretty happy until I heard a V2 lol
Paradigm servo 15v2 ( then 3 months later a second. Ended up with 4 within a year) - Was very VERY happy until I wanted more and went to a DIY build and never bought another B&M again.

I then switched to DIY and have done over 80 builds now ( I don't post much stuff because it's for my enjoyment and I really don't care to answer a million questions about every build to be honest lol)

2 x IXL ported 14cf monster ported subs ( awesome but wanted something smaller)
2 x IXL sealed 4.5cf boxes ( not nearly enough spl vs the ported ones)
2 x LMS ultras in 4CF boxes ( great drivers, not enough spl)
4 x Mal-x 18's in 2 ported boxes, 2 sealed ( had a great time with them, 2 were ruined in a flood and couldn't get anymore, so I sold off the other 2)
2 x Mal-x 21's in 6cf sealed ( enough output at the time, grew into MUCH more)
4 x XXX 18's ( Still sealed in crates) ( to be used in new home)
4 x IXL's in IB when basement was being fixed from the flood ( then switched for UXL's 3 months later) ( were awesome until I got a projector and had to move seating position)
2 x FTW 21's (added to the MAL-x 21's) had used them for a good year.
2 x THT's ( used them for a while but moved one to work and sold the other) great sub but didn't go low enough (dayton DVC)
4 x G-horns ( sold 2 to a friend but likely going to be buying them back for my new house)
2 x JBL 2242H to be used as stands for my Noesis speakers.
4 more FTW -21's to be added to my current 4 x 21's and single G-horn, UXL-IB and 2242's

There are lots more subs thrown in the mix that i built for fun and gave away to friends and family. I've used pretty much any driver worth using from most companys, though not all were used in my HT room, They were all tested in my living room and garage. I've got 4 more builds on the go at the moment and another 8 planned. Doing a paradigm sub 2 clone with AE 18's for a friend in the next 2 months or so.
So I should be over 100 builds by this year I'd think.

When Not came out with the clone info, it changed the way DIY was done. We now had the power to do any build, with any driver and easily power everything for under $1000. I've had over 30 different pro amps and still have 8 in storage not including my 6 x FP14 clones, 2 x ipr 7500, inuke 6000 and 2 x ep4000's.

My only advise is, never go listen to something better that what you have, it will never end biggrin.gif ( I've since stockpiled 12 more 2242H's, will be getting 8 more FTW 21's and am in the planning stages of my new HT room. It's gonna be epic hahahaha. I will never stop, I love this hobby.

^^^ Back it up to an outer wall, the ultimate tapped-IB.

WOW N8! That was almost one whole page of this thread. And if that's the case then you should label it as chapter 1 of your saga.. Lol!
