Miracast built into AV Receiver

I think it would awesome to have Miracast built into the next wave of AV receivers. It feels like a natural place for it to exist. Here are a few reasons why:
  • I hate the idea of another box sucking up an HDMI port just for this.
  • Most people have their receiver out in the open. Having the antenna built into the faceplate would give most people awesome reception most of the time.
  • If it just popped up when you connected with your device without having to change inputs that would be even better. I'd feel like Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 when he connects to the monitors in congress http://youtu.be/2VdZFKT5YTc
  • The AV receiver is already the media hub in most home theater setups.
  • Because we need another way to watch cat videos in the living room.

The main point of this post is to drum up some support before CES 2013. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see this happen.

You're more likely to see this in a Blu-Ray or TV since at least some of these devices already have the required WiFi support along with the necessary processing power.

Miracast is http://www.wi-fi.org/wi-fi-certified-miracast%E2%84%A2

It's already built into some TV's and I'm sure it will find it's way into Blu-Ray players, media streamers, and stand alone dongles. Just makes a lot of sense to me to have it in the Receiver. Quite a few already have Wi-Fi and Airplay, so it shouldn't be hard to get the ball rolling for miracast.

As far as I'm aware the only current AV receiver with WiFi builtin is the Sony STR-DN1030. Miracast will not work over the WiFi-to-Ethernet bridges that some AV receivers use as dongles. Airplay support in a receiver doesn't imply any sort of wireless support.

More importantly AV receivers would need a huge CPU upgrade to support streaming high-defintion video. Manufacturers aren't likely to be all that enthusiastic about scrapping their tried-and-true designs in order to support something that would be likely made redundant by many TVs should the ball ever get rolling for Miracast.
