DVD's clicking/chattering in HT system

I'm not at all sure where to put this, but here goes. I've got a modest home theatre system with a Toshiba HD DVD player and a Marantz NR1501 receiver, connected via HDMI. After years of no trouble, commercial DVD movies started clicking/chattering randomly several months ago. I thought the DVD player was going bad so I bought a Sony Blu-ray player this week, but when I popped a DVD in the problem was still there and even a lot worse. CD's play fine. I've googled the problem and found a lot of posts about this problem with burned DVD's in computers, but nothing in sound systems. The only other components that could be causing the problem look like the HDMI cable or receiver at this point, but I'm stumped. Is anyone familiar with this problem in theatre sound systems? What's the best course of action? Thanks.

Today we are getting the static on CD's so I guess I'll try a new cable and then a new receiver. Drat!

Static or clicking/whirring noise from the drive itself? From your 1st post I presume it is the latter?

No, it's clicking/chattering/static that's coming through the speakers.

Start by removing the cable at both ends, and reinserting - a few times (to make sure the connector on either the cable ends, player output or receiver input haven't built up some oxidation making a poor or unreliable connection). Do it gently - your basically rubbing the metal connections against each other to make sure they are clean & making a solid connection.
