Official Sony KDL60EX645 thread - Page 5

Hey! Just got a 60EX645 This past weekend, replacing a Sammy LN52A850 that had panel bonding issues that Samsung would not stand behind.

Love the new Sony. Still get familiar. I have not calibrated it yet and out of the box, prefer picture setting on 'Auto'. I am an idiot and when I adjust the picture 'on my own' I tend to make things worse. At some point, I'll try some of the calibration settings mentioned here though. I appreciate all your effort to post them.
I have two panels, this one in my living room and a smaller Sammy in the kitchen fed off of a powered splitter. When the kitchen TV was turned on or off, it was turning off the Sony. I had to go into the menu and turn off the HDMI control. Funny in that no matter if the kitchen TV was turned on or off, it sent the 'Off' command to the Sony.

Has anyone connected a wireless keyboard? Rumor I have heard is the Logitech K400 works but... A search online produced many statements from Sony that no wireless keyboards work. What say you that actually have experience?
I called Sony Tech support and they said any USB keyboard will work. I bought the Logitech k400r. Just plugged in the usb to the tv and it works......sort of. All it really enables you to do is type more effeciently than with the remote. You still need the remote to go back, forward etc. Kind of stupid but when you use the mouse pad, which works by the way, it changes to the screen from the remote. You can't just type it in the browser. But WTH it is way better than trying to type with the remote. I just got it on the weekend and need to play with it a bit more, so maybe this is not an accurate assessment. However as I said, it beats trying to type on the remote. None of the other buttons seem to work with the tv browser, unless I am missing something. All in all still worth it for the 40 bucks.

Yes, as Jetboat said..but make sure you get a keyboard/mouse combo, one usb, as mine did not work with seperate usb's.
Yes, the browser sucks, and you can't download a different one, at least I haven't found one that does yet. Bookmark your favorites, makes it a little easier.

No, you have to go inside the store for that price.

Online is always listed as $1498. A lot of people, including myself, got the 60EX645 for $999 or $1099. You just have to walk in the store.

That's a good price.

I just took my Sony back because I was having some problems with distortion through the built in speakers. I got another 60ex645.

Oh and the price is still $1096.

I got a k400R, works decently, certainly less difficult than using the remote.
Bookmarks are a blessing, too bad they cannot go on the favorites list.

Remote is slightly cumbersome in any case, it seems like the 'features' were added on then some one just made it work on the remote. I have to wonder what premium NetFlix paid to get a special hot button...

Otherwise, I am very satisfied with this TV. Eventually, I'll get around to calibrating it.....

Does anyone still use built in speakers anymore? smile.gif

Yes, for regular tv viewing they are fine. When watching a movie on Blu-Ray I use my full audio system.
Yeah. I use my TV speakers most of the time and if the family is going to watch a movie I'll set up some computer speakers. My elaborate audio days are over.

BTW the new TV has much better PQ. The old set had easy to see clouding covering about %45 of the screen mostly around the center of the screen obvious in most types of room lighting. The new TV has a little spot covering about %5 of the screen at the bottom left corner and hard to spot even in a completely dark room with a black scene. Anyway that was a pleasant surprise.

I just picked a 645 for Lake House, as I moved my Greenish XBR2 up last year. Well a friend still has my greenish XBR2 with a new bulb, the first one lasted 7000+ hours before I placed it. I ended up getting a NX720 as a replacement from Sony for the XBR2! Well I liked the picture so much on the NX720 so I bought 645. Just curious as what the depth is for the stand, I know it measure 19" across but was wondering the depth since I forgot to measure it before I left. Reason is I want to raise it a little by using a TV Riser. Thanks!

Does anyone have good settings for sports?
When I turn on the "motionflow", it is worse than without.
Thanks
I picked up one of these this past week in exchange for an LG 60LM7200 that had banding and uniformity issues I just couldn't live with. I've been trying to get my settings dialed in for the past few days. Screen uniformity is much better than the LG though PQ on the whole (black levels, contrast) seems to be a little worse. I do have some minor flashlighting and clouding in the bottom corners and I can also see the slight shadows (or "feathers") in those corners during bright content too. I can live with those things as they are fairly minor. However with me there always seems to be some kind of nasty "right in your face" problem.

Unfortunately, I am also seeing a problem I am calling "blue smearing". Basically when I am playing Skyrim, and there is anything dark on a neutral colored background, and I (the camera) move around, the dark objects leave a blue trail or "smear" behind them. This does not show up much during the game's day scenes, but at night it turns into a blue smeary mess. I don't have pix yet but it should be fairly easy to photograph because it's painfully obvious.

I could swear I've read about this issue before but my searches have only come up with topics dealing with permanent smears on front/rear projection which is a separate issue. Has anyone else with this model seen this? Any way to lessen the effect?
I've spent a week calibrating, tweaking, and experimenting with this set. I've gotten the PQ up to snuff for the most part. TV and movies look good, but game mode still has some significant issues.

1) Flashlighting from the sides - For some reason, this set has a hard time with flashlighting on some games worse than others. I did not think this set did dimming but something's going on here. I had the exact same problem on the HX850 I returned although it was even worse on that set. See the below shot of "Code Veronica HD" on Xbox360. As you can see, the side edges are way too bright, whereas the middle of the screen is too dark. This occurs on most darker content in game mode. Other modes and brighter content seem totally unaffected. Adjusting backlight (Already at 1) has no effect, but adjusting the brightness does. You can turn the brightness down to eliminate the side flashlights but then you are crushing blacks like crazy and can't see half the screen. You can't win.

2) Blue shadows - So, on every other set I've had, you can see double-images on a lot of games because they run at 30FPS and the TV updates at 60. It's called "Frame Doubling" and AFAIK all modern flat panel sets suffer from it including the two plasmas and 4 other LED sets I've tried. However, on this Sony the double-images are often very very blue. When you move around, this causes everythign to have a distinct blue tint to it. See the shots below from Metal Gear Solid 2 HD on Xbox360. The first picture is a still shot, the second shows motion. Notice the blue after shadows on the beams. There's also a shot of my horse in Skyrim illustrating the effect. Sorry for the terrible photos but I'm trying to control the game with one hand and take pictures with the other. What I've found is that the degree of blue is tied directly to the brightness setting. If you leave the brightness around 50, there is very little blue shadowing. If you lower the brightness in an attempt to lessen the terrible flashlighting (see #1) then you will see tons of blue everywhere. So basically, you have to choose between terrible flashlighting and black levels or blue shadows everywhere. rolleyes.gif

3) This set has terrible, terrible viewing angles, at least compared to the IPS panel sets I've been trying. Anything slightly off center causes all blacks on the far side of the screen to go gray and the picture is washed out. In fact, I suspect the problem #1 might be remedied if I were able to sit 15 feet from the TV and still play. I've noticed that if I get up and move away from the screen a little more it starts to lessen though my living room only allows me to get 10-12 ft away at best. I like to sit about 7 feet away dead center when gaming, so it appears that at that distance the viewing angles to the sides of the screen are already too extreme.

So basically, it looks like I have to choose between poor screen uniformity (LG and their IPS panels) or the bad blacks/blue shadows/viewing angles of the Sony. Do I want my games to look good or my cartoons/anime? Apparently I have to choose. It's a shame I can't do plasma (sensitive to flicker and buzz).

Hi all, I just picked up this tv last saturday, first impressions were very good. A week before i picked up a LG 55lm4600, color, brightness, and viewing angle were good but that flashlighting and clouding were so bad i decided to return and get this one, plus the 3d gave me a horrible headach. For the past couple of days the tv has looked great (mostly daytime viewing), last night i played a little cod black ops 2 in the dark and noticed flashlighting from the lower left corner (on a black loading screen), its pretty bad, like a spotlight shining all the way to the top of the tv, literally a thick beam of light going from the lower left corner to the top middle of the screen. Its only noticable on a black screen. I was wondering if this is normal or should i exchange? Also when i would zoom in through a sniper scope there was this wierd horizantal banding effect in the black areas (left and right of screen) that i havent noticed on a black screen before and couldnt see in a solid black screen (I really looked for it). I dont know if that was just how the signal from my PS3 was seen by the tv or what. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time

I just picked up the 50" ex645 for dirt cheap and I love it. The picture, at least to me, is amazing after i fiddled with the settings and much better than the three year old LCD I had. I have the 55" hx750 for my living room (which I paid almost twice as much as the ex645 when it first came out) and frankly, I think the ex645 looks much better, picture-wise, although they're both very nice.

I have more white bleeding in the top corners in the hx750 during dark scenes than the ex645, but it really doesn't bother me and, unless I pay close attention to it, unnoticeable.

Hi guys. After a couple of weeks or researching TV's I just ordered a 50EX645. It's going to be replacing my 8 year old 32" Sony. That Sony had been very reliable but during some back to back power outages during Hurricane Irene, not Sandy. My hues were messed up. My yellows are orange, my greens have a bluish tint, and the whole image in general has a red tint. I can't wait!!!!! smile.gif

Hey guys...

Just wanted to get opinions regarding my screen while I'm still within exchange period. These shots are taken with camera in manual mode so that it is consistent from shot to shot (notice the power light). Slides are white to black with a few grays in between. The only thing I've noticed is that the screen has a slight greenish tint on the left side. Perhaps a bit darker on the left. Not sure if it's a deal breaker though.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback Steve! Yes, the greenish tint thing is very subtle. My wife doesn't see it at all. I tend to notice it when there is a solid, earth-tone color on the screen such as a beach. Dark greys sometimes look a bit greenish on the left side of the screen too. If you look at the dark grey slide photo, you can see the darker area in the upper left part of the screen.

Incidentally, I notice the same thing on my iMac and an HP monitor that I have in the house. It may just be an LCD characteristic in general.

Does anybody have good sound settings for KDL60EX645?

The current standard and dynamic setting is not adequate for custom mode
post #144 of 158
Here's an interesting photo showing how uneven these edge lit displays really are. This is a shot of a gray screen which was then manipulated to drop brightness and increase contrast as well as saturation. The result shows the lighting pattern of the LEDs as well as the color differences across the screen.

I've got a similar tinted area on my 60EX645 as well (left side and also a smaller area extreme top-center). I can only notice it when I drag a white background window using a PC or on some movie pan sequences.

I noticed it day one, but I had already changed televisions twice and my girlfriend (now, wife) would have probably kicked my ass if I changed TVs again. I learned to live with it and it doesn't bother me now.

Yeah, it's subtle, but enough that I notice it. For example, if there is a gray brick building in the background, the bricks on the left side of the screen have a slight (but noticeable to me) hint of green. But I know that LCD is not a perfect technology and I could have worse. I already exchanged the set once as the first one had 2 prominent bright columns of light from the bottom edge of the screen.

Wife doesn't notice any of this of course. Sometimes I wish I could "dumb down" my senses. LOL.

I received my 50EX645 yesterday. It replaced an 8 year old 32" Sony. That Sony had been very reliable but during some back to back power outages during Hurricane Irene, not Sandy. My hues were messed up. My yellows are orange, my greens have a bluish tint, and the whole image in general has a red tint. So far I'm very happy with the performance of this TV. I have it calibrated similar to the CNET settings except I lowered the backlit to 7, raised the color to 53, and I have my sharpness at 10. The TV is in a bright lit room that is surrounded by windows. TV is bright enough to handle daytime viewing with no issues. At least i had no issues.

I played Halo yesterday for about 2 hours in the late afternoon using the game mode and I did not feel any noticeable input lag. smile.gif Also I did not see any noticeable screen issues and I had a chance to watch it at night in a dark environment. I'm sure there must be some uniformity issues, since all LCD.s have them, but in my regular TV viewing all day yesterday I did not encounter anything that alarmed me. Over-all I'm very happy with the performance of this TV. The only thing that I did not have time to try yesterday was the internet.
I have now changed my calibration settings to Sodaboy's D6500 settings and in my opinion it looks better than the CNET settings. It has better contrast, and deeper blacks. Just for curiosity I checked to see which panel I have and my 50EX645 has a CMI-V500 panel. Who makes this panel? Any way I'm very happy with this set but I have yet to try the internet.

Hello everyone just got this tv coming from a sony 55hx800 which was a great tv. So far happy with this unit. Some clouding but not too bad. Top right corner is brighter then the rest. Honestly has a better or same pic as the sony it replaced. More to follow

I have been advised to avoid serial numbers less than 501000 and look for build dates after Sep 2012. I know how to locate the serial number. How do I find the build date?
Thx.
