Center channel advice - Page 2

I am reading this thread with interest tcc.

I have some older Paradigm 5SE mk 3 floor standing speakers and would like to match them to a center channel too. I do have a budget cc-170 that I use with Titans in another room but, if I can get a CC match to the SEs, I could make a 1'x2' shelf to raise the base for the 46" TV about 4" and sit the center channel in front but below the TV. I realize in a perfect audio world that may not be the best solution but that would place a CC similar to the CC-170 about 3" below the SEs tweeters on my setup. My stand is more enclosed at the back than yours and I have assumed that a rear ported center channel would not like to be enclosed too much so I wanted to get the CC on top of the stand anyway.

I have heard and love those studio 60s by the way.

The TransDeco unit comes with casters and "furniture" style circular feet. Each "foot" is on a threaded post so you can level out the stand.

I'm currently on carpet and use the feet. If you have 2.5" or 3" room under your TV cabinet/stand the TransDeco's base will slip under it just fine. A friend bought the same unit but only had 1.5" space - he removed the "feet" and used standard furniture floor-protectors (URL below). The "cup" of the protector fits the foot-receptacle on the Transdeco base perfectly leaving only an inch of needed clearance.

Here is a pic of my current setup. I have a non-typical cabinet under my TV - works for us! The bottom of my TV, a Panny 65" GT50, is 41" from the ground. (This is adjustable by 1" increments down to 33".) I have a KEF Q100 on it's side as a center and it blocks the post holding the TV.

If you decide to get it PM me and I can help you with one odd thing re the set up.

That looks great sdg, just the solution I'm looking for. Although it doesnt bring the cc inline with the mains, at least it brings it closer and now i have room to get the Studio cc-690 smile.gif

Can you PM me the setup issue, although I may not buy it right away I'd like to plan ahead.

I need to see if someone local has this. The link you provided before they don't ship to Canada frown.gif

Btw, I can't remember but does the hardware to mount the tv come with the stand or should it have come with the tv?

I just did some quick measurements and I have at least 2" of space underneath the base of my current stand, so that's ok. But the base is listed as 20" deep whereas mine's only 18.5". That'll put the tv further back in order to hide the front of the stand. Also I never thought about the viewing height. Right now the center of the screen is perfectly aligned to a natural viewing height sitting on the couch. If I were to raise it 10" or less to accommodate a new Studio cc it will make "us" look slightly up and I'm not sure if that'll be comfortable. *sigh*

Since the TV stand is only 20" tall, have you considered making a riser for the TV? Something similar to this would be very simple to build:

Then you could angle it upward for the tweets to fire toward your ears.

Having to look up to the TV is a legitimate concern. I have found that if I look up(with my eyes) for any length of time, I tend to get a headache.

Wow, that is sweet looking! And not only does that get the center speaker up closer to the height of the tweeters on the L/R speakers, but you can fit a really serious center speaker in there.

Altho I think the OP mentioned earlier that he is close to the weight limit on the stand already, I think it is too low at 20" as it is.

If you cant purchase something else higher and to accommodate a larger center channel, I would try this......

Audition a center channel of your choice (Studio 590 or 690 hopefully), mount it on a stand in front of the TV so it is just below the bottom of it and angle it up.

Pull your mains forward so the front 3 are somewhat of an arc. Recalibrate and see what it sounds like.

This is all excellent advice, and what I will have to do if I ever try again to add a center speaker. Unless I ditch my current RPTV and get a fancy new plasma TV and stand!

IF I go with the bigger Paradigm center, the shelf idea posted by cydeo1 is the way I will go. Nice pics!!

Will PM the setup thing in the next couple days (working long hours this week!)
I bought mine directly from TransDeco - if you contact them they could let you know the options for Canada.
The mount comes with the unit - tilts and swivels. Fits 65" Pannys just fine.

You only need about 16.5" under your TV cabinet/stand. About 3.5" extends out the back, it's where the post that holds the TV meets the base.
Re the TV height - the stand lets you tilt the TV towards the viewing position, just like a wall mount. I have reclining seating (couch and chair) so the extra TV height actually turned out to be a bonus. Before when reclining we had to tilt our heads down to see the TV.

It's a bit of a pickle really whether you get a stand or build a shelf - one wants enough room for a nice cc (and high enough to be in-line with the mains) but you also don't want the TV too high smile.gif Maybe that's why 24" speaker stands are so popular?

You are correct. The rating on the top shelf is 200lbs and the TV is already 139lbs with the stand. If I were use the CC-690, which is already at ~70lbs, I'm already over the limit. I know I could buy the next model down, but where's the fun in that biggrin.gif

Not really. As it sits right now the TV is perfectly centered at eye level when sitting on the couch. But if you are referring to the CC position, you are correct.

This is what I had mentioned in one of my previous posts. It won't look "clean" and may block a component but I may sacrifice that for better sound smile.gif

Must be a pretty low couch, or you are slumping/lying down it or you are shorter than I imagine lol.

When I am sitting straight up on my couch, from the floor to my eyes is about 45-46".
My Pana is wall mounted about 31" from floor to bottom of TV and I could adjust it an inch or 2 higher for a bigger screen "effect" but its pretty good the way it is.
I wouldn't think of going lower.

Try this......place something solid under the base and see what it looks like. Maybe even a couple of phone books.....I think you'll be surprised.

The couch is of normal height but you kind of sink into it when you sit down. It's more for comfort and lounging. I'm 6' tall so I'm by no means short smile.gif.

I was thinking of "marking" the center of the screen 10" more than where it is now and staring at it for a few minutes to see how it is. I could try your suggestion but I would have to call my buddy for his help as my petite wife wouldn't be able to lift the tv...lol biggrin.gif

Revisiting this topic as I'm still thinking about doing this.

Also I had emailed the stand company with no repsonse frown.gif I may have to look at another avenue to locate this stand here in Canada.
