Mini Split Distance Limitation and DIY

Is there any distance limitation between the outside unit and the inside unit? I'm asking this because The way I'm going to have the mini split, I'm going to have to run probably a 20' pipe. I just want to know if there is any limitation. Also, how hard it is to do it as DIY project? Maybe I can do some of the work and then pay somebody to do the part that it is hard to do. Thanks

I dont know for sure but i think the compressor has to be fairly close. On mine, the compressor is directly behind the wall where I have my unit placed.

As far as DIY, I wouldnt do it. The company that installed mine had to pour cement for the unit to sit on, drill into the house and run the ducts. Also had to have an electrician come on and wire everything up. On top of that, they had an inspector come out and make sure everything was done to code.

If you are a pro and doing stuff like that, i guess it wouldnt be to bad, but if you arent, i wouldnt attempt it.

20ft will not be any issue with most, if not all systems. I had a Mitsubishi Mr. Slim minisplit installed and two of the heads are more than 20 feet away from the main unit. Check the documentation for the Minisplit you are considering. It should state this in the specs.

I would not consider this a DIY job either.

If memory serves, Cathan (Flaming Oak Cinema) purchased a minispit and installed it himself. He did have an AC company come in and connect the tubing for the unit. He did save a lot of money doing that.

Check his thread or PM him for info.
