I would much prefer the Pioneer towers over them Sony towers

Not really my preference for subs - however, I will take the BIC 1220 sub
over that Polk sub.

For starters, read this
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57490890-47/mission-impossible-design-great-sounding-affordable-speakers/

Between Sony and Pioneer, one will sound more rich, full and balanced sounding - and the other
boomy, un-balanced and thin. One was on display at Cedia 2012, the other was not.
Move down the page, and find the speakers
http://www.audioholics.com/news/trade-show-coverage/2012-cedia-show-report

Go to Best Buy and do a demo.

I would buy a sub and receiver from somewhere else - however if you must
do Best Buy - I would at least take this Bic over the Polk

I would look at a Denon refurbish receiver here,
the 1612

considering the denon 1613 now over that onkyo in the first post

how big of an upgrade would that be?

A nice upgrade

Pretty much agree with everything zieg said...the pioneers are FAR superior to the Sonys, and it ain't close. Speakers, in most cases, you get what you pay for. The Pioneers really give the most bang for your buck..hence why they are so highly recommended. They will do better than most cheap Polk, Jamo, Infinity, Sony, and even entry level Klipsch towers. Until there is some more competition at this price point, I don't see them being de-throned anytime soon. As far as Subs, the Bic will trump the Polk, but the $299 Klipsch RW12d is the king of budget subs.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780078&Tpk=rw12d - $299
Pioneer Towers - $250
Denon amp - $199

Best budget 2.1 you can buy, IMO. All for $750.

If you must go cheaper on the sub then the bics will suffice.
You could also look into bookshelf speakers at your price range and grab a beefier sub. Its fun to shop around.

so bic subs are better then polk?
From my limited experience with both (ie friends owning them) I'd say yes, but I do not own either so I can't say for sure. Maybe someone who has one or the other can say.

bought the pioneer speakers, the denon reciever, and some energy cb 10 sub that sounded really good

hooked it all up and its ridiculously good but i gotta return everything because the room literally shakes during action sequences and my neighbors are already complaining

i think im gonna redo this with some bookshelf speakers with stands and no sub

I'm gonna go with audioengine p4's and a denon 1513 since I don't need the network stuff
