My "New" Sony VPL-BW5 Projector

Somebody has this projector for sale locally for $300. He says he will also include a remote-operated "roll down" screen, wall bracket for the projector, and a 25 ft. HDMI cable. Says it is in "great condition with no problems." He said he has never replaced anything, nor has he had any problems.

Is this a good deal?

I have already read all those websites about it after doing a Search. My question is not about its specs or detals...its about whether or not it is a "good deal" for $300, with an 86" screen included.

How much is the cost of a replacement bulb? Factor that into your total purchase price.

From the quick searching I did, seems like they can be had around $200-$250...but I also read that the lamp life is supposed to be 3,000 hours when used on "Normal" mode; so shouldn't it be awhile before I would have to buy a new one?

Anyone else care to chime in? The seller said he will hold it for me until tomorrow...I need to make a decision on this quick!

Well I just picked up the projector and screen. The seller demo'd it for me before I bought it, and I was happy with what I saw. Seems to be in great shape, and the picture wasn't too bad either.

I now have 2 obstacles to figure out:
1). How to mount the motorized screen so that it will lower itself in front of my wall-mounted Panasonic ST30. Ceiling-mounting is not an option; I have seen "special" brackets made that allow the screen to come 6"-12" off the wall...maybe going to end up having to buy one of those.
2). Connecting this with my Onkyo 709 receiver, which only has 1 HDMI "Out" --> does this mean that I am going to have to choose between plugging in the projector and my TV? Or buy one of those splitter switches so I can have both going into the HDMI "Out" port?

That's too bad you only have 1 hdmi out. You can buy an hdmi switch on monoprice for $50 or so to solve that problem though.

After doing some research I think that I do actually have 2 HDMI outputs. I saw there was a 2nd one on the back of my receiver, but it reads "(Sub)" so I assumed it was only for audio...but from what I've read, it is the same as any other HDMI output. I am going to start setting this thing up now. We will see!

I have a 709 as well. You'll need to find the correct output settings. I set mine as "both" going to both my plasma and older Sony VPL-hs51.

Best of luck with it and enjoy the new toy.

Can you elaborate on the "correct output settings" please?

Sure, I had to ge fire up my plasma and receiver to remember . In your on screen menu for the 709 just pull up the very first setting and choose HDMI out. As just plain "both"., at least that's what I did. I also have another projector that is out of commission at the moment that I rotated between it and the Sony. Both worked best for me. Some of the choices would not output to one of the two projectors. I forgot which. So, more than just "both" may work for you.

So I just set everything up, and the projector was working great when watching cable; however, when I put a Blu-ray into my PS3, the projector read "Frequency is out of range" (or something along those lines).

I have HDMI connecting my PS3 to my Onkyo-709 receiver. I have HDMI connecting my Panasonic TV to the receiver via HDMI (Main). And I have HDMI connecting my projector to the receiver via HDMI (Sub).

Can anyone help me out with this?

I did some research on this^ issue, and came to the conclusion that I just needed to change the Output settings on my PS3 to only support 480p, 720p, and 1080i. My new question is, though:

Do I have to go into the PS3 settings and change this every time I switch between by TV and projector? Or is there a way to make the PS3 automatically change to 1080p for the TV and 720p for the projector?
