The White House wants your opinion on The DTV Delay ACT Bill
President Obama said he will not sign the DTV transaction act into law on Monday until he hears what the public has to say, you can comment here

he already signed it. the new date is June 12th.

No, according to Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News, the president has not yet signed the bill. What a disaster if he doesn't sign it!

FYI, by my count, at least 40% of stations in the Upper Midwest will have ended analog broadcasting by 2/17, based on station announcements. (That includes 13% of stations which already have turned off analog, including KUON.)

so if he has not signed it yet how can ketv stay analog until June?
Until DTV Delay Act is signed, technically the transition for ALL stations remains 2/17. Though of course, it's about 99% certain Obama will sign it, so KETV & the rest of the Hearst-Argyle gang are 99% safe in saying they'll delay until 6/12.

What a mess if Obama DOESN'T sign this bill after all, unless the Dems in Congress give up and the original 2/17 date stands. It's got to be yea or nay, this CANNOT go back to Congress for further cud-chewing at this point.

Will the KETV delay mess up my new digital signal from Lincolns ABC channel 8 come Feb 17th?

They are moving to there orginal channel 8 for digital?

I am in Sarpy county and I can get channel 8 digital feed today. I cant seem to get there analog today on the real channel 8 very good even with a good VHF.

I am thinking the whole end channel design was based on everyone moving at the same time. Now that KETV is not moving till JUNE I bet we have issues they did not predict or test for.

KETV, Please move on time as in Feb 17th, and clean up the spectrum, dont delay, save electricity- be green.

I've wondered the same thing. The reason analog 8 doesn't come in well in Sarpy County (even in areas where it otherwise should) is because of interference from 7. I remember a time a few years back when 7 was momentarily off the air, and all of a sudden reception of 8 was pretty good. When 7 came back on, 8 again was drowned out. Sometimes when the stations would ID, I'd be able to make out the "8" logo on channel 8 but there would be the "circle 7" logo as well! Basically 8 was unwatchable in Sarpy County (using an indoor antenna) until digital 31 came on full-power from Utica.

Now I've been told that adjacent channels aren't as big of a deal with digital, but in pretty much all the cases it's also a case of co-location (Iowa PBS analog 32 and digital 33 comes to mind, or Fox analog 42 and digital 43).

31 doesn't seem to suffer that much from interference from analog 32, but on the other hand 32 is pretty weak in western Sarpy County while analog 7 tends to be the clearest analog signal.

I'm guessing even with a pretty good VHF antenna, western Sarpy County will lose ch. 8 until June. I hope I'm wrong on Feb. 18th but we'll see.

I think KETV is the main point of concern due to the adjacent channel with KLKN. KMTV's analog 3 signal isn't adjacent to anything else locally. Same goes for KPTM, as their analog is adjacent only to their digital, and being co-located it doesn't matter. (I was watching KPTM News Thursday evening and I thought they said they, and KXVO, were shutting analog off on 2/17. Did something change?)

The problem is with KETV ABC channel 7 and Lincolns ABC channel 8.
I could care less about the other guys not moving on Feb 17th.

There was a study that if adjancent channels were with in 15 miles of each other there would be NO issues on Digital.

These two are far apart so everyone trying to get both there could see issues.
This was not planned for as everyone was to move at the same time.

For the study they had a truck come out and map everything, sector by sector.
The link to those signal maps is a few pages back. They don't apply anymore for channels 7 and 8 till June.

I wonder since both are ABC they are competitors, KETV did the delay for advertising profits and to protect there DMA rights for the high population Sarpy county area.
It may also knock off channel 8 from some near by cable systems.
Those closer to Lincoln may have troubles getting Omahas ABC. Those closer to Omaha wont have a chance at Lincolns ABC.
KLKN's reception problems in Sarpy County are because its transmitter is 60-75 miles away (depending on your location in the county; most of the population lives closer to the 70 mile mark). The operation of channels 7 & 8 meets FCC minimum distance requirements, analog or digital.

Markets are assigned based on viewing patterns for the market as a whole, not one station. Even if everyone in Sarpy County could get 8 & 10, the viewership still wouldn't be greater than 3, 6, 7, 15, and 42 combined. Besides that, most people in the county would likely prefer to get their news, weather, and sports from the Omaha stations because they're closer.

I doubt it's that. At least one FCC commissioner noted that Hearst-Argyle as a group (they're KETV's parent) is keeping most of their analogs "on" until June 12, and praised them for it. I'm not sure what Citadel's thinking is (they own KLKN) -- at last check, they're keeping their analog on in the Quad Cities and Des Moines, but shutting it down Feb. 17 in Lincoln and Sioux City. Having watched these companies operate in Des Moines-Ames for years, I thought there'd be a chance that KETV and KCCI would stay on, and I certainly expected all four of the Citadel stations to shut off analog Feb. 17. I guess I was wrong on the latter.

It's like a game of finding patterns on Sesame Street. I found the pattern, did you?

KLKN and KCAU will have upper-VHF digitals, which are generally considered the best place to be. WOI and WHBF will have low-VHF digitals, generally considered the worst place on the band to be. If it was me, I'd wait as long as possible to move back to low-VHF too.

I just did a full QAM scan, looks like all the new channel space when toward some kind of NHL pass, there are tons of new channels now that were not there last week. Maybe after this is over they will add more HD.

Its all about making money and these special sports packages make money, where HD is free and makes them NO extra money (other than it keeps people from switching to Dish or DirecTV, where they have those channels)

That may be true, but as a group the general view is that they tend to be somewhat averse to anything that requires spending money, and running a second transmitter for four more months fits into that category. If they were really concerned about their low-band assignments, they could have taken their channel election process to the second or third round and gotten in-core UHF channels, as a station in Davenport on analog 6/DT 56 did.

I suspect they decided based on what the competition was doing. NBC in Hastings was already all-digital and CBS 10/11 delared early on that they would make the shift around 2/17. Sioux City's NBC also declared early for 2/17, and they're a major player if not the top station there. There was no similar rush for the analog exits in Des Moines (so far, just NBC and Fox) or the Quad Cities, and the top stations there are keeping analog until 6/12.

how do you know it went for that. Maybe they are making room for more HD by the way NHL switches to MBL in baseball season maybe it's for that or a split. who really knows.

There is some new information posted at the following link regarding the local FOX affiliates switch to digital.

FOX 4 & 17
After going to there site and seeing there map of coverage I can now see how KOLN Lincoln could BID for the Fox Rights for the Lincoln eastern DMA area only. There stations just do not cover the eastern half of the DMA, kind of like why there are TWO different ABC stations in the Lincoln-GI-Kearney DMA.

Any more rumors about KOLNs new network?
