My parents live in Falls City, the extreme southern end of the Omaha DMA, and KMTV-3 is the hardest Omaha digital signal to pick up for them (outside NET 26, which is covered by a repeater in Richardson County). They have an aerial antenna and are about 90 mi from the Omaha antenna farm. I suppose the higher position of the stick might have helped them, but now they get Omaha stations in HD thru Dish so they don't really care too much about OTA. (I guess this becomes a bigger issue if Dish balks at the next carriage agreement with KMTV.)

I would suggest those of you looking at OTA reception should go to this site: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29 Just fill in the info and be sure to enter your probable AGL antenna height.

It took a leap of faith on my part to give it a shot. But solidifying channel 12 was the consolation prize for me. What makes it possible is that all of the Omaha stations are on UHF and Lincoln is going VHF, so I can use the pre-amp to join two antennas together. The AntennaCraft Y10 is optimized for channels 7 to 13, and seems to be the best around for that band. From my perspective, 8, 10, and 12 all seem to line up pretty close together, so once I did a Google Maps to orient my house towards the towers, it went well. I put it in my attic, which probably hurts my reception, but it's out of the weather.

The FCC's coverage maps suggest that KOLN-10 should be viewable for you.

KLKN-8 appears to be out of your range, though. But you never know; an outdoor antenna if you've got a clear shot of the horizon to the west-northwest with a pre-amp might work.

Just curious, does anybody around here subscribe to TurboHD? Just curious what they think of it and the channel selection. It seems to be the most reasonably priced satellite HD package that gives you the major channels.

I mostly care about sports, so I'm fine with ESPN, ESPN2, Versus, WGN, and the NFL Network as long as I also get the regional FSN network as well.

If you get the turbo pkg. it looks like you will not get any sd channels and FSN does not have HD. I have every thing except any season pass programs.

Looks like Dish Network carries FSN Midwest and the Royals in HD.
From a few Internet searches it appears that regional sports networks are available on the Silver and Gold TurboHD packages, but apparently not Bronze (basic package). Dish Network does have most of the regional sports networks in HD, though I am not sure if the regional sports networks on Dish show SD programming when there is no HD programming being aired, or if they are simply off the air like Cox 745. I see FSN Midwest listed but not FSN Kansas City, so not sure if FSNMW includes FSNKC on Dish Network or if on Dish Network viewers in Nebraska would be getting the Cardinals games rather than the Royals games.

If I had a clear view of the southern sky I'd have a TurboHD package and know from experience, but as I don't... that's the info I could come up with via Google.

I have Dish Network in Nebraska
I do not have any HD from Dish
On Dish in Nebraska we get the Royals BB games. The Cardnials are blacked out as well as the Rockies. In my zip code we get both Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports Rocky Mtn. Dosn't do much for pro sports but when college stuff is on there is often diff. stuff covered.

From what I understand if you have the HD oly package you will not get the SD programing on FOx Sports when they are not broadcasting an HD game. MAy be wrong or it may have changed but I know that is how it has bee for HD only subscribers.

Today on FOXMW the MVC tournament is on but broadcast in SD and not HD. I have the monthly program guide and it shows the fox stations as SD only. In Iowa we get the Big Ten network in HD but not available in nebraska. I also have Platinum HD but there are just a few more HD channels that I get that you may not get with the Turbo package like Smithsonian and MGM. You should get NHL too as Turbo should give you all HD channels on Dish.

ANALOG NIGHTLIGHT:
The FCC has released a list of tv of stations eligible to participate in the "analog nightlight," continuing analog service until as late as July 12 with information on how to convert to digital TV and emergency messages. However, many stations on the list have already ended analog broadcasting. The only Upper Midwest stations listed as having indicated an interest in the nighlight are WCCO-TV/4 (Minneapolis), KSTP-TV/5 (St. Paul),

and KETV/7 (Omaha). (5/14/2009)

now, after june 12th the only analog channels there will be in Omaha are

24- my network tv

and:

61-3abn

considering, if you live east of 72nd street in Omaha you cant get

the CBS and ABC stations from Lincoln at all

I am not surprised you cant get them in Nebraska City

I would think down in the Nebraska City and Falls City areas,

you would more likely get KQTV aka the ABC station from St. Joesph

over the ABC station from Lincoln Nebraska

I know of a friend in Falls City who says he can get KQTV from St. Joseph real good in his town
post #7456 of 9406
I will be surprised if K61GA (3ABN) remains on 61 much longer, as I was under the impression that channels 52-69 were being terminated at the same time as the analog shutoff date. Correct me if I'm wrong.

KETV and KPTM are listed as may be short spaced.
Translators and LP stations on 52-69 are allowed to continue operating but must be prepared to shut down within 30 days of notice from the final owner of that spectrum.

If you look into the channels that are left after the spectrum has been sold off, 6 mhz. between 2- 51 for tv then there is a lot of (white space) out there.

Anyone know where you can buy the "The AntennaCraft Y10 or AntennaCraft Y5-7-13 that are both optimized for channels 7 to 13" at a local OMaha store?

This is the perfect antenna for the VHF high Lincoln channels 8 ABC, 10 CBS, and 12 PBS

I ended up buying it online from Warren Distributing. Solid Signal also carries it.

Dang about KETV keeping the analog "night light" going for another month. I was looking forward to channel 7 shutting down so I could pick up KLKN 8 out of Lincoln.

NEBRASKA:
KCWL/51 (Lincoln) plans to flip its affiliation from CW to FOX as part of the digital transition. The station, which does not have a digital companion channel, will leave the air June 9 and return June 12 in digital form as FOX affiliate KFXL. The station will apparently act as a satellite of KTVG/17 (Grand Island), which is also seen on KSNB/4 (Superior). The stations are operated by Pappas Telecasting. Pappas also owns Omaha FOX affiliate KPTM/42, which has served as the de facto FOX affiliate for Lincoln for many years, though KTVG has also had a translator in Lincoln for many years and has been available on cable and satellite more recently. KCWL signed on in 2006 with 51.4kW and will operate with 14kW digital. Both power levels are similar to low-power stations, though KCWL is licensed as full-power and could eventually upgrade.

The move should end speculation about the future of the FOX affiliation in the Lincoln/Tri-Cities area. Earlier this year, CBS affiliate KOLN/KGIN reserved the domain name fox1011.com, which redirects to a page on KOLN's website. Before access to the page was restricted, it showed a FOX 10/11 logo, program schedule, cable channel listings, and an explanation that digital TV made it possible for KOLN to carry both CBS and FOX in HD. Station management later said it was an experiment. (6/4/2009)

Since that leaves the Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney market without a CW affiliate, I wonder what will take the place? I assume the satellite locals packages will drop 51 since programming will be identical to 17; would CW be replaced by a national feed or just not be carried? (What is the precedent in other markets?)

May also free up some cable bandwidth, as Time Warner for example won't need to maintain identical programming on both channels 4 and 18.

Lincoln will continue to have broadcast and cable service from KXVO, though wonder what it means for central and western Nebraska? Cable-only feeds? Digital subchannels? There's also still KUVR-LD in McCook which had been simulcast with KCWL; as McCook already has a Fox LPTV I wonder if KUVR-LD will keep CW or become a second Fox signal.

Finally, I found out that analog 18 and 35 will both remain on the air indefinitely; and may still convert to digital 47 and 49 despite having the same programming and virtually the same coverage area as 51.
There's a chance they could carry CW on a subchannel and just haven't announced it yet. Or, it could just continue as a cable-only channel. (CW+ is the 24/7 feed of the CW and syndicated programming for markets smaller than 100, and that's what KCWL has carried.) Pappas/KHGI was the marketing partner for the WB 100+, the forerunner to the CW+, before KCWL signed on.

DirecTV already (and has) gives access to the National (I believe East Coast feed) CW HD feed to those of us in the Lincoln market even with 51 there.
noticed that KOLN/KGIN has been broadcasting some news clips (both in studio & in the field) in the 16x9 ratio within the 4x3 box...wondering if this is a sign of some good things to come
post #7470 of 9406
Has anybody heard if KFXL (formerly KCWL 51) is going to have two channels, or just one? If it has more than one, what will be on the other channels (and will they be HD or SD)? Anyone know, or will we just have to find out on friday?
