Yep i get you entirely. Around 1999 i heard a huge setup of 12 channel discreet in a store called Bjorns in san antonio. My understanding is that it was setup as a demo by the THX guy.
There were no height speakers but it sounded quite phenomenal hearing sound effects like pingpong balls and whatnot jumping around.
The implementation of fancy surround formats has lagged behind the theoretical technology for a long long time.
I still havent heard the dolby atmos system but i cant wait to do that when a great movie for it comes out.
Hopefully the surround sound folks get their act together and make a scalable 20-50 channel setup where the user can simply add whatever speakers they wish for. It would certainly be a boon to those that sell speakers.
For those that want to build, its a lot cheaper doing everything at once for maximum channels they want / can afford. Hopefully very efficient and cheap speaker options arrive for the massive Dolby Atmos style home theater.
