Using Avia DVD for 1080p?

Hi all,

I'm finally getting a 1080p display device (new JVC RS46) and realized just now that my only display disc is the old Avia DVD. For purposes of basic color adjustment (tint, brightness) and patterns for alignment and sharpness (for zooming and my anamorphic lens) do I need to get something new or is it okay to trust the 480p upconversion long term? (I say long term since I'll use what I have this weekend but can always buy the right tool for the job and make adjustments).

Download and burn the free AVS 709 disk
I burns to normal DVD but requires a BR player to play on.

So will a calibration performed by a lower res DVD be inaccurate? are there any quick explanations one can read to understand why?

Because the AVIA DVD is encoded with an eye toward playback under Rec 601 specs (used for standard definition), and HD such as 1080p is meant to be played back under Rec 709. Although they both use D6500 as a white point, there are differences in luminance for red, green, and blue between the two. For example, a scene encoded for playback under Rec 601 will have brighter greens when played back under Rec 709. Whether what you get is correct will depend on how your player and/or TV handle the conversion.

Also, if you are planning to use AVIA for grayscale adjustment, be advised that the encoder they used introduced a very slight magenta tinge to some grayscale patterns. IIRC, it isn't bad enough to be visible but can impact meter readings a bit.
