Building a Surround System for a friend

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum since I'm usually dealing with older vintage speakers but a friend of mine asked if I could help them build a home theater system. I have very little knowledge in good affordable speaker systems that are new.

They asked If I could keep the price under $1200 maximum, below $1000, and somewhere near $600-800. I don't know how easy that would be, but I know it is at least possible. They are open to HTIB or separate components, but they want the best bang for their buck.

They have a larger room, and it will be used mostly for movies, TV and some music. They aren't audiophiles, but can still notice a good set from bad.

They need a surround sound system, so this includes FrontLR, Center, Surround, Receiver, and sub(if necessary for the speakers). Does anybody here have any ideas?

Wow, Thanks for all the great info. Do you guys have a specific budget receiver, or are most of them around that area fairly similar?

What do you think of Jamo? I've been looking around and the Jamo S606 HCS-3 5.0 system popped up and I found it for very cheap, like $300 at vanns. It said they were "returned open-box" and I don't know if that's bad or good.

I'm somewhat familiar with Jamo, only because I'm using the Jamor Cornet III's as my personal rear surrounds. I like the sound of them and was wondering if the S606 5.0 thing was a good deal since I'm guessing they have fairly similar sound quality.
