As noted by my posts made shortly after I saw Pacific Rim in the theater, I thought it fell well short of del Toro's best work but still had enough good stuff in it to redeem it from failure. It was a fun summer movie but not much more, it seemed to me. But then, as many of you know, I am a sucker for loud and dumb, so consider the source. smile.gif

I think my favorite Blockbusters this year would have to be WWZ and MoS.
Not without their faults, but I was thoroughly entertained by both.smile.gif

Agreed, but I'd have to include ST in the mix. This summer was nowhere near great, but I rate it a "good".

Agreed. It was like a really crappy Transformers movie.

Its no Godfather but it is what it is & thats badass robots fighting badass monsters with some great CGI. If you cant go into a movie like this and just have fun with it then something is wrong. This one should be quite the sub tester when it comes out on blu-ray!

This movie is exactly what it should be; a homage to the afterschool Japanese robot series imports that played on TV in the 80's. It's exactly like them. I think it's that type of audience this movie was made for. It uses all the same cliche lines the english dubs had with the same lame plots. I thought it was well done.

It is what it is. I enjoyed it, though it never ever caused me to think. My favorite sequence was the hot chick's flashback. The little girl surrounded by monsters was very well done. Too bad the rest film did not aspire for such greatness.

Worth a rent. But better experienced on a huge screen (in 2D as 3D can kiss my ass).

I don't care. smile.gif

This reminds me very much of a tv show I watched as a kid called Ultraman, and this bluray will be on my shelf. cool.gif

I am doing a blind buy on this one. Looks like fantastic HT fun and I hope it delivers! cool.gif

I'm sure you saw it looks to be filtered, but not as bad as STID? Hoping for some good, convincing low end. smile.gif

I did see that. frown.gif I still have high hopes that it will be awesome overall audio and LFE. Transformers 3 does not go very deep either, but I just rewatched that last night and I still consider it overall one of the best audio tracks on blu. The only nitpick is extension, but I thought the LFE/bass otherwise was fantastic, so I am hoping we get something similar with Pacific Rim. I am curious to see the full graphs at db though next week and then to watch it myself. Looks like fun and I hope it is! smile.gif

We did a viewing party for TF3. At the end of the movie, what my guests were really talking about was the Paramount stars effect from the very begining. Had to play it over and over. Louder and louder. Very cool surround effect, and agreed the audio was fun. Hoping the audio is even better for this - and the movie biggrin.gif

Nice! That opening scene with the stars is excellent!

Count me in among the ones disappointed, although what I've seen in the trailers didn't give me much to hope for. The actors especially the lead was just crap. This guy like many before him can only play himself over and over again. If you watch SOA then you saw all he can muster, and there is nothing here to you haven't seen on that show and probably much less. The other characters were pathetic played by pathetic s. Even del Toro regular Perlman was forgettable if it wasn't for his shoes. Don't even get me started on the scientists. The look of the film was another let down, mostly because I don't care for Japanese godjira films that this one wanted pay homage for. Fight scenes were boring, the creatures were yawn inducing, and frankly I was rooting for them. Maybe there is "fan cut" out there that will rectify this waste of digital bits of a movie.

Movies like this are the only reason I go to the theater anymore. I really can't see spending $45 for my wife and I to go see a romantic comedy at the theater. We're better off watching that sort of thing at home.

This movie is going on the candidate list for opening night of my dedicated home theater....... in 2015 smile.gif

What if bigger, louder and more outrageous sequel comes? frown.gif
post #230 of 321
Then we'll have to have a double feature for opening night smile.gif

Just finished up with the 2d version and what a blast! cool.gif This was one FUN powerhouse HT ride for A/V. Looking forward to giving the 3d version a spin tom or Thurs. Awesome blind buy IMO!

Looks like Del-Toro is at least optimistic that a sequel will get made. He's already started writing it.

Blind buy for me as well and really enjoyed this. Some really stupid aspects reminded me of Prometheus. Clean them up and I think boxoffice is doubled. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
all they have to show is rockets don't get through a mystical force field surrounding the kaiju and only leaves the manual pounding or close assualt rockets from the Jaegers. And then put a couple of REAL actors in the place of the two "scientists", not these Prometheus rejects.

But the overall fun and scope of the fights, great PQ and performances from MOST of the cast and this was still a WINNER and funnest movie of the year for me.

Hoping #2 is green lit!!

Thankfully the rest of the world liked the movie so that it made $400M plus worldwide.

Maybe GDT won't change much to keep it perfect.

A part of me wants to say Pan's Lab since it was soo creepy, but I'd have to agree.

On one hand, parts of the movie screamed other movies like Serenity, Avengers, Super 8, Star Trek, heck even Top Gun came to mind when watching this.

Still, I don't care. It was fun a fun ride. smile.gif
