laptop with HDMI no DD/DTS

I have:
RX V-1400 (no HDMI) receiver.
Samsung Bluray Player with two HDMI in and one HDMI out.
TV with HDMI in.
Laptop with HDMI out, but no extra digital audio out, so I can't connect it to av receiver and have DD or DTS. Do I have to upgrade to receiver with HDMI or external USB sound card with digital audio out would transfer DD and DTS. I am actually not sure if my laptop sound chip can output DD and/or DTS even if connected to AV receiver with HDMI. Not sure how to check that.

The reason I am suspicious about ability of my laptop's HDMI out to put out DD or DTS is that I tried to connect it to my Bluray HDMI in (yes that Bluray player has two HDMI in and one out) and output with Bluray optical out to receiver. No matter what settings I used I never got DD or DTS working.

which bd player? are "we" sure that it will take a hdmi input, extract the audio, and re-route it to the spdif output?

although it is not specifically stated in the manual, i would make an educated guess by reading what the manual says and the examples that are given is that it is a straight passthrough, and will not do what you want...

pages 16 and 17 of the manual would appear to confirm my train of thought, simply because of the way the examples are presented...

So you think that my laptop outputs DD and DTS, but I can't receive it with my setup? So what about external (USB) sound card? I really like my receiver and I am not ready to upgrade it yet. Any other ideas? Thank you.

no, you cannot do what you want with your current setup... the bdp is only acting as a hdmi switch, it is not stripping the audio from hdmi INPUTS and sending it to the spdif OUTPUT... it is merely passing through the hdmi signal...

it has nothing to do with either the laptop or your avr... it's entirely due to the way the switch is working...

to do what you want... and there's no guarantee you won't experience lip-sync issues if you do it this way, but if you absolutely NEED to keep your current setup, this is the only way you can make it work...

- get a hdmi switch that strips the audio from the tmds stream and puts it out via spdif... something like this:

hdmi switch with spdif output

- connect your sources to the INPUT of that switch...

- connect the spdif OUTPUT of that switch to the avr...

- connect the hdmi OUTPUT of that switch to the hdmi INPUT of your bdp...

Last night I discovered that my TV can play BD backups directly from my external usb hard drive. Picture quality is better than played on PC using Power DVD player. All movies have multiple "audio languages" to choose but some of them play DD or DTS only with commentaries.

I guess, without receiver with newest sound formats it was just too much hassle. I got nice deal on Onkyo tx-nr 818 and can't be happier. I can't believe how much better I like the sound compared to my RX V1400. Now I am wondering should I sell it or try to utilize it in my 7.1 setup. It is still very powerful receiver rolleyes.gif
