Will I need a USB port on AVR to playback music files?

I usalley listen to radio music w/ the big TV turned off, (programed activity w/ Harmony remote) in the car I have a USB port so I keep all my music on flash drives.

I haven't moved any of my music files to the HTPC because I'm thinking that the big TV would have to be on to select what to play
(was actualley concidering a very small TV to select).

Edit: I have a Sony BD player it has a USB port (w/ big TV on)however when I inserted the flash drive and from Sonys menu under play music there where no files to choose from?

Planning on upgrading the AVR (concidering Yamaha 1800 no USB/ Yamaha 1085 USB plus HD radio or Yamaha 3800 has every feature anyone could ask for) and want to make an educated guess to meet my current requirements.

I post in HTPC section because it's somewhat PC related and PC usalley are the most knowlegdable.

I can play my music through the HDMI that I have between my HTPC and AVR. They are actually on my PC in my office and streamed to my HTPC via my network. Most mid-range and above AVR's these days can also network stream your stored music.

Either way you will need a monitor or your HDTV so that you can control what you are selecting to play, etc.

I only have wireless so I won't be connecting AVR to router though a etherner cat5 wire.

was curious if the Yamaha AVRs that had front or rear USB connections that allowed flash drives and portables to be played could the TV or small monitor be off and make my selections from the front of the Yamaha display (like in the car)?

why did'nt my Sony BD player reconize my flash drive music files?

You may want to pose that question in the Receiver thread for that particular brand or even download and read the owner's manual from their website.

You should be able to stream music to the AVR with a wireless bridge or direct connect via ethernet if you HTPC is in the same enclosure without an issue. Selecting what to play could be cumbersome though because most AVR's don't have much of a display of their own and rely on having it show on your TV these days.

Most AVR's that have a USB port will show the folder information on the front display so you dont really need a monitor connected to choose files. If you are unsure, take a flash drive to Best Buy and try it out before you buy.

There are 2 possibilities why your Sony BDP would not play music files from flash drive.

#1 your music files are in a format that the player does not support (consult your manual).

#2 You went to the wrong heading on the XMB menu for the player i.e. if you go under "Videos" and click on a music folder it will be blank because there are no video files in the folder. Be sure you are going under the "music" header, select "USB Device, and choose a folder with music files.
