Let's just say there is a perception out there that the elements of the movie business don't really want him to get any more attention than he already has.

And I think that perception is farfetched and based on a bunch of Internet chatter and entertainment gossip mongers. Could he have possibly won more awards? Very likely, but then, you can make that argument for Scorsese (1 directing oscar), Coppola (1), John Huston (1), Kazan (1), Michael Curtiz (1), George Cukor (1) Woody Allen (1), Mike Nichols (1) Kubrick (0), David Lynch (0), Robert Altman (0), Hitchcock (0), Bergman (0) and others. You got a big long list of people that you can easily make the same argument simply based on the number of awards they got verses their nominations. So if the Academy or even Hollywood "hates Spielberg," then they hate a ton more people, including just about everyone in the Academy itself, not to mention a bunch of people they gave a lifetime achievement award.

Yeah, but I don't see that translating into the Academy having it in for him. Quite the contrary, the ones who pick the directing Oscars are fellow directors, and the majority of them have nothing but praise for him. Should he have won more Oscars? Probably, but Scorsese should have won more (Raging Bull?), Orson Welles probably should have won for Citizen Kane, and the list goes on an on about how the Academy has whiffed. So, yeah, I don't see SS being singled out at all, and in fact if you look at Oscar history, he's been doing pretty damn well. The fact is that they only give out one directing Oscar a year, and winning two of them (and being nominated for five more, as well as having a good shot at a third win this year) is enough to put you in rarefied air with the greatest of your field. Not to mention that he's cited by many Academy voting directors as being a big influence in their careers, and that it's pretty much recognized people will talk about SS and his films long after we're gone. So no, I don't think the Academy or Hollywood has anything against him. Very much the opposite.There are a number of directors who I think would be far more likely to hold a "hated" distinction than SS (and even then the debate would rage over those other directors.)

I'll be damned if I've ever understood the difference between Best Album and Best Record.

Best record is for the best single, while best album represents the compilation of an album.

Then what's the difference between Best Record (single), Best Song and Song of the Year?

It seems to me that the Grammys give out about 150 awards that are all really the same thing as an excuse to bring every working performer in the business up on stage during the telecast.

Don’t get archiguy started.


Record of the Year goes to the artist. They have expanded this award through the years to include the the producer, and the recording engineer. You are lucky, Josh, there could be MORE appearances.

Song of the Year goes to the songwriter.


It's the same for the Oscars, and the seemingly dozens of other award shows leading up to it. Why? As we all know - money.

Technically they're still recording them

...When I look at the winners it gives me the impression that music is very poor nowadays, while the music industry is quite rich (I do like Adele and Fun. though...)

The editors of Argo and Silver Linings Playbook were recognized for best edited feature film, dramatic and comedy/musical, respectively, at the American Cinema Editors’ 63rd annual ACE Eddie Awards, Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.

William Goldenberg edited Argo, and Silver Linings was cut by Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers.
This makes ACE the latest organization to honor Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage drama Argo, which has already been recognized by those including the DGA, PGA, SAG and the BAFTAs, where Goldenberg also was selected for his editing.

Accepting the ACE award, Goldenberg thanked the Argo team and called Affleck “my partner in the editing room.”
Goldenberg actually was a double nominee at the Eddies, having co-edited nominee Zero Dark Thirty with Dylan Tichenor.
In eight of the past 10 ACE Awards, the winner of the best edited dramatic feature category has gone on to win the Oscar in editing. Once in the last decade it went to the winner of the comedy or musical category (Chicago).
At six of the past 10 Eddie Awards shows, the film that won either the dramatic or comedy/musical ACE categories went on to win the Academy Award for best picture.
No film has won best picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a best editing nomination from ACE since Ordinary People in 1981.

This year, six of the nine nominated films for best picture have editors that were nominated for ACE Awards. That includes Argo and Silver Linings, as well as Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.
Also at the Eddie Awards, Nicholas C. Smith and Robert Grahamjones, editors of Disney/Pixar’s Oscar-nominated Brave, won trophies for best edited animated feature. Editor Malik Bendjelloul won the documentary feature category for his work on Oscar-nominated Searching for Sugar Man.
Steven Spielberg was honored during the event with the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. He warmly saluted the editors -- his “heroes" -- saying “there is no greater partner to have than all of you.” Spielberg got a laugh when he commented that they have given so much to so many directors, some of whom might “make you wonder why you are not the director.”
He also gave heartfelt praise to Michael Kahn, his editor and collaborator of 37 years.
Editors Richard Marks (Terms of Endearment) and Larry Silk (One Survivor Remembers) received lifetime career achievement awards.
Presenting the award to Marks, filmmaker Alexander Payne emphasized the importance of teachers and mentors. He related that he was beginning to teach at UCLA, where earlier he had be taught by Marks. Payne said he hoped “to give to others some version of what [Marks] has given to me, and Dede Allen to him, and so on back for generations.”
Among the winners in the television categories was Walter Murch, whose work on Hemingway & Gelhorn won in the category of edited miniseries or motion picture for television.

silver linings is a real gem of a movie.
i will be disappointed if it doesn't win a couple oscars

this is o'russells best film and i'm not sure there's another
director out there currently that can implore better performances
from his actors.............

except maybe george lucas.
