- Router: Motorola NVG510 (came with service)
- Speedtest: 1.45 down / 0.33 up
- Devices: 2 Laptops (Wi-fi), 1 HTPC (Wired), 1 Synology NAS box (Wired)
I like to stream videos from my NAS box to my HTPC while I'm on my laptop. I'm often using Skype while on my laptop, but, whenever I start to stream videos, my Skype starts to downgrade. It still works, but it decreases the quality to accommodate the reduced speeds.
I live alone, so the above scenario is probably the most 'intensive' my bandwidth usage will be. I realize my internet is crap, but I want to keep costs low, so I'd rather not up my speed. Is it possible that some sort of better router would fix the issue I'm having? The only reason I ask that is because a lot of what I'm doing is just happening internally. On my laptop, I'm simply browsing the internet and Skyping. Neither are that intensive. Streaming video is all internal and shouldn't really need a connection to the outside at all.
I'm wondering if one of these badboys might help:

I could have my NAS box and HTPC hooked up to the switch, since, most of the time, the HTPC will be doing "fairly heavy" usage of the NAS box.
I have a general idea about networking, but still don't know a lot, so forgive me if I'm using terms incorrectly or something. Thanks in advance.
