Picking up from the 2012 thread http://www.avsforum.com/t/1324312/2012-f1-in-hdtv.

Let the 2013 silly season commence, with a new broadcast package as F1 in HD leaves the SPEED/FOX network.

IIRC, NBC uses 1080i.

Speaking of Ferrari, if you like to watch winners, it's hard to root against Scuderia Ferrari.

I have been a Ferrari fan since I was a child some 40 years ago. Huge Ayrton Senna fan too though. RIP

It seems as if my thread for this past year has come to an end. It was nice to have one on this site that was frequently used.

I'd have been happy to let you start the new one, but thought we had really come to where the new season is relevant to discussion and the old one has passed, not to mention the calendar year is just about gone.

This thread should be good. 2013 could be exciting with the Alonso/Vettel rivalry heating up again and fewer back-markers to get in the way.

I really think Lotus is going to be a real contender next year. Don't be surprised if they do better than Mclaren and Mercedes. Raikkonen is now back and in top form. I think Hamilton is in for a big disappointment.

Finally caught this year's Goodwood Revival show last night. What a hoot. Many surprises for me - you'll never guess fastest lap in the last race if you don't follow this stuff (Euro vintage racing I guess.)

If you don't normally watch it, you should, it's on next week again on Speed - search Goodwood and you'll find it. Revival is the races and Festival is the fair I think, they're both fun, but the races are spectacular for someone at least in their late 40s, better the older you are smile.gif Really, if you consider yourself a car guy, you need to watch this if you haven't - that's all I'm going to say. Except that BGJ (Big Green Jag) is badass.

Oh, one more thing - there's a way you could define "coolest car on the planet" such that it's here. Yes, the coolest car on the planet, right there, no doubt (it's white and in the last race, and listen carefully to understand why if you haven't figured it out by then.)

I am very concerned with the coverage on NBC. Speed did such a bang up job. Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised! Miss my race weekends already!

NBC Sports did a decent job of covering IndyCar last year and Hobbs, Matchett and Buxton are coming to NBC so I dont think it will be too bad.

I didn't know Buxton was coming too...that's GREAT news!
I could be wrong about that. Isnt that what they said on the last edition of "Formula 1 Debrief"? I am certain of Hobbs and Matchett.

Pure speculation does not make me feel as confident as you. Buxton did not get picked up. Leigh Diffey takes his spot. commentators will be good. maybe for me it is Comcast, but my NBC HD signal is not as good as other networks. Speed HD was very good.

We will see. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. I am certainly glad that it seems to be catching more momentum here in the States. My plans to attend Austin next year are in stone!

That is so awesome that you are going to Austin! I am so jealous. I have Time Warner and the picture seems about the same.Speed probably was a little better. I have noticed that Speed had better sound through my 5.1. It always bugged me when I watched an IndyCar race on NBCSpt. Hopefully they will step up their game since this is a new contract and I think they understand we are a picky lot.

Diffey has Varsha's spot, not Buxton's. They have not announced who the pit lane guy will be as yet. As mentioned via Tweets from Matchett, Hobbs, and Diffey, the three met with NBC in NY last week, and posted some photos from a group dinner. They hinted heavily that the pit lane decision has been made, but were very coy about who it would be. But, by the tone of the Tweets, I would be pretty surprised if it was not Buxton.

Time will tell.

I'm guessing it is Buxton's spot they just want to delay announcing.I was wondering if Buxton wasn't getting the job wouldn't he have said something by now? Bad news travels faster than good news!
That makes sense. Diffey does not belong in the pits. I like Buxton but I would like to see a former driver do it. I know it probably wont happen.

I'm thinking that it's way too expensive to hire one. I would rather see a former driver commentating along with the other commentators that way we get some insight into what the other drivers are thinking tactically. This occassionally gets touched on by Steve Matchett and even David Hobbs when he's not forgetting whom he's talking about. biggrin.gif
post #24 of 2217
Lol Yi, Hobbs is a chatacter. I agree about the salary. An F1 driver wouldnt do it. I was thinking more along the lines of an IndyCar driver or one of the retired Champ (CART) car drivers. Scott Goodyear or someone along those lines.
Scott Goodyear?!?!? I think we'd finally get side-by-side racing at over 200mph in F1!

But seriously, Scott Goodyear?!?!?

Ditto.

I don't have any idea what the pay scale is for someone in the pits, but I doubt Buxton's price is high.
It would be a shame if he didn't get the gig.
Then again, he did shoot his mouth off after the NBC deal was announced.
Goodyear was just the first person that came to mind. Paul Tracy would be cool but he is still tryind to find a ride. I know its not gonna happen. I just think it would be cool to get an IndyCar drivers perspective of F1 especially down in the pits where all the tech is happening. And I think that the teams and drivers would treat a successful fellow driver much differently than a reporter. Someone like Jacques Villeneuve would be awesome since he has driven in both series.

HRT is officially out. 11 teams - 22 cars on the grid for 2013.
no indycar drivers doing commentary please... smile.gif

and whatever nbc does, please do not let jan beekhuis anywhere NEAR the commentary booth... eek.gif

hopefully they will put a "professional play by play guy" in that spot... lead announcing isn't easy, and broadcast can fall apart quite quickly if that person isn't up to the role... this will be especially true since they are keeping the pair of matchett and hobbs... both have a lot to say, but still haven't quite mastered when to say it...

i would LOVE to see al michaels take that lead slot... it won't happen... frown.gif but he and mike tirico are 1 and 1a when it comes to lead announcers these days...

as long as we are wishing... smile.gif i'd like a second audio track... put mario, aj and sir jackie in a room together and air their comments... tongue.gif now that would be interesting to listen to... biggrin.gif

Leigh Diffy is doing the Play-By-Play for F1 and Indycar next year.

I'll take a 3rd audio track, the un-altered track feed, engine and crowd noise only.
