2013 Formula 1 in HD - Page 18

Somewhat related, I know this is an F1 thread, but some Indycar/NBCSN news. Hobbs will be on the Indycar broadcast for Milwaukee, Matchett will be in the booth for the Toronto doubleheaders, and Buxton
will be in the Indy pits at a couple races.

Will Buxton, another member of the network’s F1 crew, will report from pit lane during at least two events.

And Varsha commented on Twitter he'll be on NBCSN for 3 races:

Too bad it isn't Jeff Gordon actually driving the car! I knew I had seen that "salesman's" face somewhere before. I believe it was mentioned sort of when Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya did the swap of race cars at Indianapolis speedway. That was the year the rumor started he was going to F-1!

His voice can be a bit annoying at times, but he knows his stuff, and he'll definitely have his work cut out for him this year, working both F1 and Indycar.

That reminds me of the Lewis Hamilton/Tony Stewart swap. Have you seen that?

Just finished P2.
Watch out for MB this year.

FWIW, I did notice some macroblocking and bit-starving.
The PQ from NBCHD wasn't markedly different from Speed's.

Does anyone know what the "world feed" is broadcasted as?
I would guess it would be tailored to the European standard (which I have no idea what it is) and not for NTSC or ATSC.

EDIT: OK, yeah, the Europeans have something called DVB-T
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB-T

This difference in standards could account for the < pristine video we got.
DVB-T is just the system for transmission of a digital signal, has nothing to do with the production of the pictures.
Formula 1 is produced in Full-HD with 42 MBit/s (!!). Unfortunately the send out 2 feeds which both are picturewise in 16:9, but one with the graphics moved into the 4:3 safe area, and one with the intended 16:9 layout.
So no european influence there.

As I wrote before - the camera-operaters take no care if the 4:3 graphics block the view in whatever shots. During the practice sessions, in the middle left area the order of drivers is displayed vertically, taking much, much space in the picture. During the race, this will disappear and instead on the bottom of the screen the race order will be shown.
Bad luck that this will be the reason why only very few hardcore fans will complain - only those are the viewers who really notice the decision of NBCSN to stick to stone age technology.
It is by the way not only horizontally crap positions, they also move everything vertically to the middle ...

OK guys. Now that it is getting ready to get serious smile.gif I need to know what the acceptable ground rules are on posting on this thread. We are in different time zones and so are the races.
When is it acceptable to discuss results? I dont want to get on here at 4:00am and post "Go Scuderia Ferrari. Alonso gets the pole!" smile.gif And have everyone hating me an hour later. mad.gif
post #519 of 1778
My "autorecord" from last year (gets all F1 basically, with one DVR setting) is picking up practice 3 on univision. Cool.

On graphic placement, I was watching an NBC network show tonight and the bug is 4:3. I assume networks are consistent with their graphic placement? Or do some change it for sports? I dunno, but it's the norm whenever I pay attention to have the stupid 4:3 placement, so nothing new.
Did a little googling and uni starts this year with a multi-year deal for F1 broadcast. Says 19 races. But my Directv guide doesn't show anything for Malaysia (it's there for NBCS.) The graphics are even worse, at least NBC has the bug way up top, but uni has it sort of 4:3 vertically if that makes any sense. Whatever, it'll be nice if there's a HD source for more than NBC is showing.

Really? I thought it was played in all time zones live. Given, in each time zone it is a different "time", but it all happens at the same time. IE: you won't know the results any faster than anyone else. I'm in the Eastern time zone and it is always broadcasted live. Is it different in other time zones?
Your observation is correct. It is on at the same time but in different time zones. So does that mean posting is fair game? People do record it. If you dont want to know before you watch it then stay off the thread?

I think that is fair. I make it a habit of not checking threads before I have seen the shows that they relate to. I don't think anyone is entitled to get mad at you if they do so.

That's my opinion. Everyone else?
Thats the only thing I can think of that makes any sense but I didnt want to step on any toes. I guess we shall see. smile.gif

You guys are on the right track (pun intended).
The way this forum works is once an episode or race or whatever has started, it can be discussed without Spoiler Tags.

If someone is dumb enough to check this thread before viewing their DVR recording, well....wink.gif

Cool. Makes sense otherwise we wouldnt be able to "horse" around (Ferrari smile.gif) during the race. That will be fun.
Qualifying has been delayed until 8p EST? mad.gif It will be Q2 and Q3. I am set to record just in case.
Sebring starts at 10:30a EST on Speed.
Q2 and Q3 will air at 12:30am Sunday morning...

They ran out of daylight is what they did. Goofy to have quali that late in the day.
OK. So they are gonna quali right before the race. Thanks for the info.
NBC initially tweeted that Q2 and Q3 were to be live at 8pm EST . Now it appears they are actually tape delaying it so it can air back to back with the race.

I would much prefer live quali. There is a college Basketball game at 8pm EST, which I guess trumps F1.

Major thumbs down to NBC from me.

The BMW was holding up the Ferrari. Now that he has passed he will give the Viper a run for the money.

Tuned in for qualification rebroadcast. Rain delay had them showing P2. Couldn't believe when I saw the 4:3 grapics orientation on NBCSHD. eek.gif Puts it pretty much in the middle of the screen. Anyone see original qual broadcast? Was it corrected? Hope they change it before the race or else it will ruin the experience. mad.gif Pretty sad that it wasn't caught it by the production crew. rolleyes.gif
post #536 of 1778
I watched most of it live and cant even remember. Since it didnt bother me they probably did fix it but I cant say for sure.
Speed has Sebring 10:30 to 1:30
