help me pick a speaker project for my son

I want to make a single driver speaker with my son for his first real set of speakers. I have good woodworking skills and want something that is inexpensive (as far as the drivers go). I want to give him the drivers for Christmas and then proceed with the build. For price, lets keep the driver at under $50 for the pair. I don't really have any restrictions on size. They can be floor standers or bookshelves. I would like something that has decent bass, but it is not a deal killer. Any ideas would be appreciated.

28 bucks a piece.

0.25 cubic foot enclosure tuned to 65hz with a 2.00" diameter port that is 6.50" long

it is a small driver, so it can only take about 10 watts before it starts to run out of bass potential, but still, for a pair of speakers that you can put on your desk, 96db from 60hz up is pretty dang good.

not to scale, just for inspiration:

Make a pair of planet 10 fonkens with these. I have a pair of these with chr70 and they mystify everyone who hears them.

I have the chp70 in a pair of floorstanders and I have not measured them but they go really low.

Possibly, but I doubt it. Changing the volume would make frequency response less flat.

Which plan is the fonkens? I don't see it listed. I did like the look of the Pensil R70.3 though.
