Thanks for that guys. It's nice to see that others here were as blow away by Zero Dark Thirty as I was. It is an impressive film, indeed.

Despite mr. wally's offer of a free ticket for your next movie, I understand where you are coming from. I have been down in the back for nearly a week but was thinking it was just another sign of encroaching infirmity. I ignored it and got out a couple of times this week anyway but ended up paying the price. Bad back or not, I was originally going to see Broken City yesterday but the reviews were so horrible I decided to stay home.

I did see Les Mis for a second time and may now do the same with Zero Dark Thirty. Have already ordered both BDs from Amazon.

Gotta say I didn't like Les Mis as much as others did. Just felt as if they sort of rushed the story for the musical parts (coming from the 1998 version and musical viewing).

I was going to go watch Broken City but same, the reviews just made me stay at home. Definitely want to check out that new arnold film!

To my fellow infirmitees - the nice thing about most typical back issues (and yeah, I got 'em too) is that they nearly always get better all by themselves in a few days to a few weeks. smile.gif

That's pretty much true after 20 years of dealing with a flakey back. Every once in a while you do something stupid which wreaks havoc, but the little things you do get used to and deal with them.

When I got down in the back, my long ago orthopedist and neighbor, now long since dead, used to tell me, "Call me again if you're not much, much better in the morning." Sure enough, i always seemed to be better the next morning. Now as I have attained, shall we say, a certain age, the process takes a lot longer.

Back to the thread, though. Although I liked Zero Dark Thirty slightly better than Les Mis, both were among the finest films I have seen in a long time. I read Victor Hugo's novel shortly before I saw Les Mis and was deeply impressed by the job Tom Hooper did of translating the wonderful stage musical to film. Les Mis is a sometimes bitter but ultimately hopeful tale of hope and redemption, told with gloriously beautiful music in an emotional, even painful, way. I loved every frame of it.

30 years ago I hurt mine swinging a splitting maul one too many times during a hot day...started with just a little twinge.
It has bothered me quite a bit ever since.

Went thru all the therapies and regimens, nothing (other than drugs) really eased the pain.

15 years ago went under the knife for a fusion....it didn't work, and probably made it worse.
10 years ago, I flew to Minnesota for consultation at the Mayo Clinic.
To make a longer story short, I was told they do not recommend back fusion...because it rarely works.eek.gif
Of course, I asked if that was true, why is it being done all around the country?

Ah backs. My got broken by a truck doing 60. Cold fronts really flare it up and I have some low grade non narcotic pain meds to apply as needed.

First ever lower back tear last season. Gave me a whole new appreciation for two I know with real back troubles.
I was stunned at how that small area can shut you down. My little 5-6 day tour was an education.
Never again will I complain to those who can't lift weight.


2nd pass on the film. I can't improve my initial review other than perhaps
catching a few more tidbits in the middle act. Nothing that added any depth to
the story.

Until one experiences it, it can't be appreciated.
I have had people, who have never had back pain, tell me a "sore back" just can't be very painful.eek.gif

Just got back from a showing this afternoon.

This is KB's masterpiece.
A superb movie, particularly technically.
The editing and camerawork is first rate....edge-of-my-seat experience here.

I have no idea how anyone, even halfway honest, could give this film a BP nomination and deny her a Best Director nod.
A travesty IMO.

The reality, the history of the Hunt for UBL has, no doubt, yet to be completely released by the govt. to the media and probably for very good reasons.
As it is, this movie is fairly close to the declassified info.

As far as politics go, there isn't much.
What the film does do is show the CIA is basically a bunch of bumblers, who couldn't find their own butts with 2 hands, let alone UBL.
Of course, that was already known (read the 911 Commission Report).

I don't know if this is BP of the year, but it is an extremely good movie.smile.gif

Earlier I read a review somewhere of Mama, another film starring Jessica Chastain. The review made me reflect on Chastain's wonderful performance in Zero Dark Thirty. In the film's last scene showing Maya (Chastain) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
by herself on a large military transport aircraft. After Maya sits down, she is thinking and then starts to cry quietly. This made me think that as proud as Maya was of the success of her mission to kill Bin Laden, she feared she had done so at the price of her soul.

It seemed to me that part of Maya's soul killing experience was losing her friends when the terrorists who had conned themselves onto the base blew themselves up and took several of Maya's friends with them.

I really admire Jessica Chastain's talent. She is able to convey more meaning and emotion with her face than most actors can with a page full of dialog. I saw her on Jon Stewart recently.
She has a great personality: very bubbly, very alive.

Ok. Back from ZDT. The first half is painfully boring and lifetime movie quality. Second half really takes off and I loved the assault. I'm sure it's due to being spoon fed the story over a decade that it was really boring to me in the end.

Chastain did fine as did the rest of the cast but it very Contagion like which didn't work for this movie.

That is a real problem with doing a movie "based on actual events."
The "actual events" are so well known, it's difficult to create a sense of tension.
IMO, KB does manage to pull the trick off.
